Softball run-rules UPIKE twice to sweep 4-game series

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville scored 24 runs in 11 innings and swept Pikeville today for the second day in a row, 15-0, 9-0, at Paul Butcher Field.

The Lady Tigers pounded out a combined 26 hits in the two shutout wins, pushing their season mark, and league-leading record, to 30-7, 15-1 MSC.

GAME 1: Campbellsville 15, Pikeville 0

Campbellsville played 17 players and used a 16-hit attack to subdue Pikeville in the first game of the doubleheader.

The nine-run first was highlighted by a two-hit inning by Jacqueline Roof. Roof led off the game with a home run and then singled as the 10th batter of the inning, scoring Markie Smith.

CU sent 12 batters to the plate and collected six hits while capitalizing on three UPIKE errors.

Victoria Decker (16-4) picked up the win with three innings of one-hit ball before relinquishing the circle to Morgan Gailor. Gailor gave up two hits, both in the bottom of the fifth when the Bears loaded the bases — the only three runners Pikeville left stranded.

The Lady Tigers scored two runs in the third when Madison Mudd, who tripled to lead off the frame, scored on a passed ball. Brianna Scott's double scored Shelby Ray.

A four-run fifth was highlighted by run-scoring hits by Kennedy Shutter (RBI), Smith (2 RBI) and Katelyn Merritt (RBI).

Merritt, who came in for designated player Destiney Taul in the second, and Hailey Szpila, each had three hits in the game. Roof, Scott, and Smith all had two hits. Ray, Shutter Rachel Denkins and Madison Mudd had one hit apiece. Smith's two hits produced four runs.

GAME 2: Campbellsville 9, Pikeville 0

A five-run fourth opened things up for CU in game two when the Lady Tigers loaded the bases on a walk and two hit batsmen. That's when Madison Mudd unloaded with a two-run double, Jacqueline Roof singled home a run and Shelby Ray's single scored two more.

Of the Lady Tigers' 10 hits, four were for extra bases. Brianna Scott had two doubles and Adrean Jordan added another to help run CU's win streak to 14 games. Collecting singles were: Hailey Szpila, Destiney Taul, Jacqueline Roof and Shelby Ray (2).

Neely Quint (14-3) went the six innings in the circle, giving up five hits, not walking a batter and striking out one.

Campbellsville scored solo runs in the first and fifth frames and two in the top of the sixth on pinch hitter Morgan Gailor's two-run single.

Campbellsville will host St. Catharine College Tuesday, April 5 in a Mid-South Conference doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Park starting at 2:00.
