Softball storms into MSC Tournament final with 9-2 win

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Campbellsville put up a big number in the fourth inning today at Michael O. Buchanon Park and defeated Cumberland University 9-2 to advance to the finals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament.

Victoria Decker (26-4) had a no-hitter going until the sixth inning when back-to-back-to-back singles by Tessa Tomaselli, Brittany Rasmussen and Crystal Bryant allowed one of two earned runs to score in the frame. Decker would go on to allow no more hits and struck out one. She did not walk a batter. In the 18 innings this week, the Lady Tigers have thrown 15 no-hit frames in the first three games.

In the six-run fourth, CU (47-8) used an error by Cumberland to extend the inning and give the Lady Tigers all the runs they would need.

Hailey Szpila was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After being sacrificed to second by Markie Smith, Adrean Jordan singled and took second on a throw. That's when Brittany Rippy squeezed home Szpila. Three hits and a walk later Campellsville led 6-0.

Madison Mudd got n infield single and Jacqueline Roof a two-run single. After Brianna Scott reached on a walk, Rebecca Miller delivered a two-run double. She was thrown out at third trying to stretch the play, but the damage was done.

Cumberland scored its two runs in the top of the sixth, but CU answered with three scores in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by another squeeze play by Scott and Mudd scoring when Scoot drew a throw to second.

Roof went 2-for-2 and Mudd 2-for-3, the only two Lady Tigers to get multiple hits. Miller, Szpila, Markie Smith, and Adrean Jordan all had hits in the eight-hit attack.

Campbellsville will play Sunday, May 1 at 2:30 ET against the winner of an elimination game between Lindsey Wilson and Cumberland University. The finals will be aired on the Campbellsville University Sports Network, 88.7 The Tiger and www.wlcufm.com.
