Tigers finish 2nd, Lady Tigers 4th in MSC Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky, — After two days of competition at the Mid-South Conference Track & Field Championships, the Tigers took second place and the Lady Tigers made a strong showing to claim fourth place.

At the end of the meet, MSC awards were given out — Campbellsville received three of them. Paxton Wiley was named the MSC Freshman of the Year and the Co-Athlete of the Year and head coach Hilary Lakes was named the Coach of the Year. 

The Tigers earned 233.5 points for second place as Lindsey Wilson took first with 282 points. University of the Cumberlands (155.5), Shawnee State (99) and St. Catharine (54) rounded out the Top 5. On the women's side, the Lady Tigers claimed fourth as Lindsey Wilson won the meet with 215 points. University of the Cumberlands (154) and Shawnee State (134) finished in second and third,respectively, while Georgetown (90) placed fifth. 

"We had a great weekend in every event," said Lakes. "I couldn't be more pleased with how we finished on both the men's and women's sides. We went out and performed our best today and the results show it. This was our last meet with the full team together and we performed well. We had a lot of PRs, school records, and NCCAA qualifiers. It was a great weekend overall." 

The men's 4x400 meter relay set a new school record of 3:35.54, cutting nearly three seconds off the 2010 time of 3:28.38. Jaron Jackson, Keyshon Truitt, Johannesburg, Boulware and Brandon Battle placed first in the last event of the meet.

All four women's hammer throwers qualified for their final flight and scored in that event. Deja Thompson placed the highest at second, throwing 39.04. Lindsey Burd (37.41 - PR) and Tiaira Scott (37.39 - SB) went fourth and fifth,respectively, as Halima Williams claimed seventh with a season best of 35.63 meters. 

Stuart Nichols threw a personal best to win the men's hammer on his last attempt — 46.97 meters. Aaron Johnson followed suit, placing second with a throw of 43.49. Clayton Embry earned fourth, throwing 40.63 meters. 

Julianna Bradley competed in the 5000-meter race walk for the first time, taking first  place in 32:27.97. Elsie Shanfeld (33:47.10) and Jasmine Wilson(38:32.08) finished in third and fifth, respectiliy. 

Mallory Vest finished fourth in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:51.81. 

In the women's shot put — Burd, Thompson and Scott went third, seventh and eighth for the Lady Tigers. 

Gracie Martin, Madison Kaiser, Jasmine Wilson and Ja'zell Woodard-Johnson placed third in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 51.52 seconds. The men's team finished second in 4x100 (Wiley, Jaron Jackson, Webb, and Brandon Battle) in 42.10 seconds.

Woodard-Johnson claimed third in the triple jump with a leap of 10.74 and third in the 100-meter dash. She set a personal best in the dash with a time of 12.62. Woodard-Johnson also ran a 26.22 in the 200-meter dash, good for third.

In the men's 5000-meter race walk, Brandon Wiseheart took third in a time of 28:50.87 as the Tigers finished 5-6-7, Lucas Pennington (34:14.57), Nicholas McGaughey (37:05.09), and Christian Thurman (38:09.72), respectively. 

Connor Stockton took seventh in the men's shot put, throwing 12.49 meters a season personal best. 

Will Ballard placed fourth in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:16.46 as Corbin Harris finished in sixth (10:21.49). 

Campbellsville claimed fifth through eighth in the men's triple jump. Thurman placing the highest at fifth (12.81 m), Garland Webb following at 12.74 , with Braydon Russell at seventh (12.59) and Wiley rounding out the point getters' at 12.23 meters.

All four Tigers in the high jump went on to score points for CU. Irell Patterson led the way, finishing second at the height of 1.90 as Russell finished third. Wiley placed fourth (1.80) and Webb tied for sixth at the height of 1.70 meters.

In the men's 1,500, Bret Crawford (4:03.34), Adam Sandidge and Dylan Ford (4:07.95) went — 3,5,7 — as Sandidge hit a season best of 4:04.83. Crawford pushed it out as he placed first in the 800-meter run. Sandidge later ran in the 5,000 meter run placing second with a time of 15:31.93.

Wiley came in second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.10 as Clayton Embry set a PR and qualified for NCCAA with his time of 15.78. McGaughey (17.24) and Russell (17.29) both set PRs as well.

Battle and Paxton took second and fourth in the 100-meter dash as Paxton set a SB for himself.
