CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville scored five runs in its first at-bat and that held up in a rain-shortened game today against University of Rio Grande at Veterans Memorial Park.
CU (33-7, 17-1 MSC) earned the 5 ½-inning 5-0 win on the shoulders of Victoria Decker's two-hitter. Decker (18-4) walked the first batter she faced and struck out three.
Rio Grande committed a throwing error in the first inning, and it was a big mistake. The teams shared five errors in the game that was supposed to be a non-conference doubleheader for the former familiar foes.
Shelby Ray was issued a one-out walk and Brianna Scott was safe on a field's choice when Gabby Gregg's wild throw to second base soared over Alex Kuhn's head.
Rebecca Miller immediately delivered a run-scoring single and Haily Szpila's ground out to first scored another. After Adrean Jordan singled home a run, Markie Smith hit a home run to center.
Smith and Szpila had two hits each in the game. Miller, Jordan and Brittany Rippy all reached safely.
Rio Grande (22-6, 9-1 KIAC) loaded the bases in the top of the fifth on a hit and two errors, but Decker coaxed two groundouts to end the threat
Campbellsville, which is now on an 18-game win streak, is scheduled to host the University of the Cumberlands at 2:00 Friday, April 8 in a conference doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Park. Fans can watch the game on the CU Sports Network - HERE.
