POOLER, Ga. — Round one of the NAIA Women's Golf Championship for
Cassidy Scantland took seven-plus hours but the junior battled through two rain delays to card an 11-over, 83.
Play was suspended due to thunderstorms and flooding throughout Savannah and nine teams were unable to start their rounds. In addition, 90 golfers did not finish their rounds.
The first round will resume at 8:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday morning for the golfers that did not finish today. Round two's tee times will start immediately following the final groups that begin their first round at 9:10 with Scantland's first pairing.
Scantland, who was the first golfer to tee off this morning at 7:30 a.m. ET, started out hot in her first few holes. After reaching the par four No. 1 in regulation, she ran her 30-foot birdie putt by the hole by 6-feet but drained her comeback par.
On the par four second, Scantland carded her first birdie of the day with a 10-footer to get to red numbers. The birdie was the first of two of the day for Scantland. The first bogey of the round came on the par three fourth hole. Scantland missed the green on her tee shot and was unable to get up-and-down.
Unfortunate luck came on the par five fifth hole for the Lady Tiger making her third NAIA appearance. After her approach came up a few yards short of the green, Scantland decided to use her putter but ended up hitting the ball twice with the ball nestled behind a divot. With the penalty stroke, she double bogeyed the hole to drop to two-over.
But Scantland came right back and stuck a 5-iron pin-high on the par three sixth, ending up making her second birdie.
On the seventh, Scantland couldn't keep the momentum going, missing the green on her approach and dropping another shot. After earning a par on the eighth, Scantland ended her front-nine holes with a double bogey just before the first rain delay started.
After the two-hour delay, Scantland's grouping started on their back-nine holes with the weather starting to play a factor. Scantland hit her first ball in the water on the 10
th hole and dropped to six-over with another bogey.
After just missing birdie putts and settling for pars on the next three holes, Scantland had another ball find the hazard on the par four 14
th, picking up another double.
On the par three island 15
th green, Scantland recorded another par but a second delay brought the golfers back to the clubhouse for another 45 minutes. After play resumed a third time, Scantland finished her next three holes with all bogeys dropping to 11-over par.
Outside of the unfortunate double-hit on No. 5, an unlucky bunker shot on No. 9 and two balls going into the hazard on holes 10 and 14, Scantland was on her game playing sitting at just three-over par.
More information will be posted later tonight once the NAIA releases tee times for tomorrow, May 18.
