MASON, Ohio — Bethesda University put up a pair of two-run innings in the second and seventh innings and Campbellsville could not recover, dropping its first NCCAA World Series Pool Play game, 5-3.
Two-seeded Campbellsville (41-18) is now scheduled to play three-seeded Southwestern Christian University tonight in its final pool play game at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET at Prasco Park. With the loss to Bethesda, the Tigers and Eagles are likely playing for the runner-up position in Pool B. The champion and runner-up in each pool advance to tomorrow's semifinals.
Bethesda (31-24), which is 2-0 in the tournament, are scheduled to play a doubleheader tonight against Trinity Christian at 6:10 p.m.
For the third time in the as many games, the Tigers got behind the eight-ball early but this time were unable to make a comeback. Bethesda put a two-spot on the board in the second with three consecutive hits - a pair of singles and a RBI double by Kevin Maxey. The Flames scored their second run on an RBI groundout by Brady Hochhalter.
Campbellsville answered in the third after a one-out triple by Mike Castellano. Casey Scott then reached on an error to score the Tigers first run. CU had a chance with runners on first and second with one out but an inning-ending double play ended the threat.
Bethesda added on to its lead with consecutive doubles by Nathan Munoz and Armando Lomeli in the third.
Romello Carbuccia delivered his first-career home run in the fifth to cut the lead to one, 3-2, but that was as close as CU would get till the final inning.
Dexter Cline (4-1) went the first five innings for CU and had another quality start added to his resume. Cline allowed three runs but gave way to Nelson Quark in the sixth. The Flames threatened automatically in the sixth after consecutive singles but Quark got a little help from his defense. Bethesda tried to scratch a run with a suicide squeeze but the Tigers sniffed it out and received an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Overall, there were four double plays turned in the contest – two a piece for both squads.
The seventh inning wasn't as nice to Quark and the Tigers, though. Armando Valencia led off the inning with a solo home run pushing BU ahead, 4-2. Munoz followed with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a fielder's choice by Daniel Dominguez.
The Tigers were able to cut back into the lead but it was a little too late. Richard Ramirez hit an opposite field home run in the ninth with two outs before Adrian Peraza struck out Cabuccia to end the game.
Daniel Sandoval (3-0) picked up the win, tossing six innings and allowing five hits and two runs. Pereza picked up a save by finishing the final three innings with the lone hit and run coming on Ramirez's blast.
Miguel Solano led the Tigers with two hits, while Munoz and Daniel Gutierrez led Bethesda with three. Lomeli and Maxey each added a pair of hits for the Flames as well.
