CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — It took 47 minutes but the Lady Tigers came alive and scored three second period goals to out-pace Truett-McConnell University in the season opener, 3-1.
The season opening win is the third-straight for the Lady Tigers in
Thom Jones' tenure as head coach..
"I am very happy with the win because it sets the tone for the season," said Jones. "We have won the first game of the last two seasons and we have steadily seen improvements in our teams."
The first period saw just two shots, with one on goal for the Lady Tigers, as Lexi Kent made the save on a Laken Walls' run inside the 18-yard box. But it was the freshman Walls who uncorked a nil-nil tie just two minutes into the second half to put the Lady Tigers ahead, 1-0.
"The first half was a struggle because we played in a panic and got out of rhythm. But at halftime we made our adjustments, calmed down and it was a totally different team in the second half.
"The quick goal in the second half was definitely a confidence booster for Laken as she made some really good runs deep in the box. We started to put pressure on their defense and capitalized on opportunities to score."
After a freshman campaign of scoring just one goal, sophomore
Taylor Beals matched her number from 2015 and pushed the Lady Tigers ahead, 2-0 in the 56
th minute, beating Kent far post.
"Our whole game changed when Beals started to get more involved," said Jones. "She has good touch and good vision and she sets the tone for our offense. If she can consistently play like that, it will be a very good year for her but also for the team."
Senior
Devon Burnside played add-on in 63
rd minute with her first score of the season as well.
Truett-McConnell added a goal of its own in the 82
nd minute as Miranda Powell got behind the defense and beat 2015 NAIA First Team All-American
Amanda Howard. The Bears finished with five shots – three of them on target – and Howard finished the day with two saves.
