SAVANNAH, Ga. —
Devon Burnside broke a scoreless tie in the 86th minute and No. 14 Campbellsville pulled out a hard fought win over SCAD-Savannah on Friday afternoon, 1-0.
Campbellsville has now started the season 2-0 for the third-straight season.
"I am very proud of our team by overcoming the hard fought battle today," said coach
Thom Jones. "We never stopped fighting and did everything we could. It paid off with five minutes left in the game to get the goal."
Burnside, a senior from Nicholasville, Ky., was able to provide the game-winner after a few slick passes from her teammates. Fellow senior
Chelsea Gill found freshman
Lakin Walls on the wing and Walls played a beautiful back-angle ball across the box for the score. The goal is the second of the season for Burnside and first assist of Walls' career.
Even though we are still making minor mistakes, there is a lot of positive things and it's starting to click," said Jones. "Once everything starts to come together it will be a beautiful thing."
SCAD came out firing on all cylinders with physical play and putting pressure on the Lady Tigers. After the first 20 minutes, Campbellsville gathered its wits and started to play its game. In the first half, Campbellsville registered 10 shots, with four on goal, but not able to capitalize.
The second half was a different story for Campbellsville's offense but the Lady Tigers stayed the course and didn't settle. SCAD turned the tides and registered 10 shots in the second period, while the Lady Tigers only finished with two – one of those being the game-winner.
SCAD put the pressure on CU's defense and All-American goalkeeper,
Amanda Howard late in the contest, by recording six shots in the final 30 minutes of play. Meghan Grable came just an eyelash from putting the Bees ahead in the 61
st minute as her shot hit the crossbar. Grable also had three more shots in the final 20 minutes that Howard was able to smother.
Howard played all 90 minutes in goal and registered seven saves for her 21st career shutout.
SCAD's Ande Eich also had a stellar game in goal, finishing with four saves on the afternoon.
The Lady Tigers will now have one more game on this road trip, as they travel to University of South Carolina Beaufort on Sunday, Aug. 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET and live video and stats will be available.
