BLUFFTON, S.C. — Tied one to one at halftime, No. 14 Campbellsville University women's soccer (CUWS) exploded for three second-half goals to run past University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) on Sunday afternoon, 4-2.
Freshman
Lakin Walls scored a pair of goals, her second and third of the season, while junior
Valeska Tovar and senior
Erica McWilliams added their first scores of the year. Campbellsville is in the middle of a five-game 13-day road trip, but is starting off well with two wins — at SCAD Savannah and USCB – to move to 3-0 on the season.
"I am v
ery proud of our team today because there wasn't just one specatular performace, it was definitely a team effort," said coach Thom Jones. "We had a couple breakdowns in the back and they scored, but we kept fighting and never gave up. We will be a very good team when everything starts clicking. I couldn't be more proud of this team and where we are at right now."
Fitness played a major role into today's contest, as the heat and humidity off the eastern coast was almost unbearable. The Lady Tigers didn't let that affect them, though, using their speed to take advantage of a defense playing shorthanded.
USCB center-back Taylor Superior was moved to goalkeeper – playing just her third game in goal in her career – and Campbellsville took full advantage. After a goal by USCB's Felicia Alpenmyr in the 25
th minute, Walls used a chip shot that went into the side netting for the equalizer in the 33
rd.
Midway through the second half, the Lady Tigers started to get behind the defense by playing the ball into space in bunches. In a span of 20 minutes, CUWS had six quality scoring opportunities and capitalized on three of them. Walls scored her second goal of the game with a chip shot over Superior in the 74
th minute to get the rally started.
"
We are proud of Lakin (Walls) and how hard she works to put herself in a position to score," said Jones. "If she keeps working like this the goals will keep coming and she will have a great season and career."
But the scoring didn't stop there, as Tovar delivered what would end up being the game-winner just two minutes later – another chip shot over Superior.
In the 83
rd minute, goalkeeper
Amanda Howard helped the offense pick up another goal. After a save on the defensive end, Howard used the wind at her back and delivered a punt that bounced once and traveled the length of the field. Walls ran the ball down behind the defense and was eventually fouled in the box. McWilliams then stepped up for the penalty kick and delivered with a left-post score, giving the Lady Tigers a little breathing room, 4-1.
Campbellsville finished with the second-half shot advantage, 10-5. The Lady Tigers outshot USCB 13-11 overall.
"We had many opportunities to score today but we just could not find the back of the net," said Jones. "But a huge positive is the team stayed resilient and kept fighting and fighting and we finally put a couple in."
USCB's Brooke Newman brought the Sand Sharks back within two, receiving a cross from Hayley Pina, and finishing left corner in the 86
th minute.
Besides the two goals for USCB, Howard finished with six saves on the afternoon. Superior recorded four in goal for the Sand Sharks.
Campbellsville will now travel to the Lions Cup Invitational hosted by Freed-Hardeman University. The Lady Tigers square off on the pitch with FHU on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. ET and then turns around with a matchup against Dalton State University on Friday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. Both games will be played at Freed-Hardeman's Josh Riley Soccer Complex. Live stats and video will be available.
