COLUMBIA, Ky. — Union College fought off two match points this afternoon in the deciding fifth set and kept Campbellsville from sweeping its matches today on Day 2 of the Lindsey Wilson Classic.
Union led 6-1 in the fifth before CU mounted a comeback off the arms of
Jessie Stone and
Alyssa Cosgrove. But after leading 14-13 and 15-14, the Bulldogs used an attack error and a kill to seal the first match of the day.
The Lady Tigers managed to earn a split with a 3-1 win over Brescia (0-3) after a marathon 39-37 win by the Bearcats in the third set. Campbellsville had five opportunities to win the set, but Brescia erased five match points, the fifth coming at 33-32.
Campbellsville 3, Brescia 1 (25-21, 25-19, 37-39, 25-22)
CU had its best attack percentage of the season (.273) and 69 total kills in finally subduing a scrappy Brescia squad.
Annija Abolina again led the Lady Tigers with 26 kills and received 11-kill support from both
Julia Fonseca and
Maria Coelho.
Inoa Fields had 56 of the team's 60 assists and added 13 digs.
Katie Johnson led the team in digs with 15 while Jesse Pendleton had 14.
Savannah Moss chipped in with eight.
Natalie Jones led Brescia with 29 kills. Rhiannon Ungerer and Mackenzie Weyer had 19 and 14 kills, respectively for the Bearcats.
Union 3, Campbellsville 2 (17-25, 24-22, 25-9, 20-25, 15-17)
After losing the first set 25-17, Campbellsville (1-2) was able to right its ship by picking up 24-22 and 25-9 second and third set wins, respectively.
Union regained control in the fourth when the Lady Tigers managed to hit but a .095 percentage. The Lady Tigers hit .158 for the match.
Annija Abolina led four players in double figure kills with 15. Cosgrove had 13,
Maria Coelho 12 and Stone 11. CU held a 60-49 advantage in kills, but also had nine more errors (32-23) than Union.
Inoa Fields had 48 of CU's 54 assists and five players reached double figures in digs. Fields led the team with 19 followed by
Jessie Pendleton (16), Abolina (15),
Katie Johnson (12) and
Savannah Moss (11).
Marissa Elam led Union with 15 kills. She also had 10 digs.
Campbellsville stays on the road Tuesday, Aug. 30 for a 7 p.m. match with Indiana University Southeast.
