CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Union College scored with 58 seconds left in regulation and upset No. 17 Campbellsville early into Sunday morning, 47-40.
The Tigers fall to 0-3 on the season for the first time since 2012 but will have a week off to prepare for Bluefield College on Sept. 24. Union improved 2-1 and will also have a week off before preparing for the University of the Cumberlands.
Tonight's game started exactly how it ended. After an hour and 38-minute weather delay, Union and Campbellsville came out like rockets firing on all cylinders. It took just 1:09 off the clock to see the games first score – a 40-yard touchdown pass and catch from Campbellsville's
Hunter Brown to
Tyus Alcorn. It was the first of 12 hookups between the two, as Alcorn finished with a new single-game program record 235 yards receiving and two touchdowns. The yardage record was previously set in 2002 by Shane Riley against this same Union College team.
But Union would answer just 1:08 later to knot the game at seven.
That was just the first of six ties and after a
Bradley Bates 21-yard field goal, the Tigers regained the lead 10-7, which was the second of five lead changes throughout the night.
After 32 penalties and and 319 penalty yards later, Campbellsville knotted the game at 26 with another Bates field goal, this time a 27-yarder with 14:22 left in regulation. Bates finished the night 2-for-3 on field goals.
Campbellsville and Union traded out turnover on downs but then the scoring came alive just like at the beginning of the night. On the final three drives for Union, the Bulldogs scored a touchdown on each, but only having the ball for a total of three minutes and 38 seconds. Campbellsville would score quickly too but came up just one touchdown short.
With 2:32 remaining, the Tigers decided to punt with the score all tied at 40 and Union marched right down the field in 1:34 to take a lead it wouldn't surrender, 47-40
Midway through the fourth quarter it looked as if whoever had the ball last would end up winning, but that was untrue as CU had a chance on its final drive moving 53 yards on seven plays. But with three seconds left and CU on the Union 20-yard line, Brown threw his lone interception of the night in the endzone with time expiring.
Brown finished the night throwing for 355 yards – a new career-high – on 26-of-48 passes. His two touchdowns went to Alcorn.
Chantz Goodman,
Wade Holtsclaw and
Kendon Young all had big nights on the ground, accumulating for 228 yards. Goodman finished with 11 rushes for 103 yards and one TD, while Holtsclaw finished with 12 rushes for 60 yards and a career-high two touchdowns.
