Higgins finishes runner-up, Tigers place third at MSC Fall Invite

MT. JULIET, Tenn. — Tiger golf shot a four-under 280 today and finished the tournament with a team score of 570 to place third at the Mid-South Conference Fall Invitational at Windtree Golf Club.
 
The 280 today ranks second in program history, but the team score of 570 ties the program's 36-hole total set in 2007-08 at the West Virginia Tech Invitational under former coach P.J. Throckmorton.
 
University of the Cumberlands won the team title and out-paced a hot Lindsey Wilson College team that made a late charge today. The Patriots finished the tournament at one-under (567) but Lindsey Wilson shot an eight-under today as a team to finish at even par (568).
 
After being tied atop the leaderboard with a first-round 66, senior James Higgins shot a final round 71 to finish in solo second. Easton Lavelle from Freed-Hardeman won medalist honors with an impressive six-under par round today and finishing the tournament at -10.
 
Higgins scattered around two bogeys, a double and a birdie on the front nine today, but came back with a trio of birdies on the back.
 
Ben Kendrick (Cumberlands) and Ryan Nowe (Lindsey Wilson) finished at -4 to be tied for third and Garrett Daniel (Cumberland University) finished at -3 to round out the Top 5.
 
Justin Warman finished just inside the Top 10. After bogeying his first and eighth holes, Warman rallied off four birdies and an eagle on his 36th hole to finish with a 68. He finish tied for ninth with Cumberland University's Ian Whittemore.
 
Justin Riffle and Tristan Blevins also improved in their second rounds. Riffle fired 75-71 to be tied for 16th, while Blevins finished solo 25th with 77-70. Riffle scattered around five birdies, three bogeys and a double, while Blevins finished with a trio of birdies, four bogeys but an eagle on the par five 13th.
 
Rounding out Campbellsville's Top 5 was Robert Johnson finishing tied for 44th. Johnson shot 73-80 in the two round to finish at +11.
 
Team Scores: University of the Cumberlands (567), Lindsey Wilson College (568), Campbellsville (570), Freed-Hardeman (574), Cumberland University (576), Shawnee State University (591), University of Pikeville (593), Georgetown College (597), Asbury University (604).
 
Campbellsville will now have a 20-day break before competing in the Lindsey Wilson College Fall Classic, Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 10-11, at The Pines in Columbia, Ky.
