MARION, Ind. — Women's volleyball won an exciting five-setter against Taylor University yesterday and ended up with a split of matches on Day 2 of the Indiana Wesleyan University Invitational.
The split gave CU a 3-1 weekend and a 6-3 season mark going into its first home match on Tuesday against Kentucky State.
Campbellsville dropped the first two sets against Taylor, which had beaten the Lady Tigers 3-1 on August 26
th at the Lindsey Wilson Classic in both teams' first match of the season.
Campbellsville 3, Taylor 2 (28-30, 22-15, 25-23, 25-23, 15-11)
The Lady Tigers stuck the Trojans with their third five-set loss of the weekend, storming from two sets down to win 3-2.
Using double-figure kills from
Maria Coelho (19, career-high) and 14 each from
Annija Abolina and
Julia Fonseca, CU was able to complete the comeback.
Inoa Fields had another double-double with 45 assists and 23 digs. Digs were at a premium with the long rallies as six Lady Tigers reached double figures.
Jessie Pendleton led the way with 43, followed by
Katie Johnson (36), Abolina (20),
Savannah Moss (16) and Coelho (14).
Fonseca and Abolina each had three blocks and
Jessie Stone two.
The match was very tight all the way through with the first four sets tied at 16-16.
"We played great in the first two sets," said CU Assistant Coach
Stephen Zink. "Taylor's defense was amazing. We were aggressive, swinging hard, playing smart, but couldn't put a ball away."
In the third set, however, CU battled through.
The fourth set was more of the same. The Lady Tigers had two huge blocks from Fonseca, and another from Abolina at the end of the set to help CU gain the lead and win the set.
The fifth and final set was in CU's favor most of the time. The Lady Tigers were up 6-2, before Taylor tied it at 6-all. Campbellsville then went up 8-6, Taylor tied at 11, and CU finished on a 4-0 run.
Becca Gerig was big for Taylor. The junior had 24 kills
Indiana Wesleyan 3, Campbellsville 1 (25-19, 15-25, 16-25, 16-25)
Campbellsville was able to steal the first set from the Wildcats, but after that it was all IWU as Indiana Wesleyan (9-1) rolled to a 3-1 win.
Campbellsville (5-3) got 11 kills apiece from
Katie Johnson and
Annija Abolina, but as a team the Lady Tigers were able to connect on only .125 percent of their attacks while Wesleyan hit .289.
Maria Coelho added nine kills.
Inoa Fields had 35 of the team's 40 assists and 12 digs for a double-double. Johnson added 13 digs for a double-double of her own, while
Jessie Pendleton and
Savannah Moss added 16 and six digs apiece.
IWU's Tay Thomas led all players with 14 kills.
CU broke away from a 14-14 tie in the first set and Coelho's kill sealed the win. After that, however, Campbellsville had trouble handling the ball and committed 26 attack errors and eight errors from the service line.
The Lady Tigers never seriously threatened the Wildcats in any of the last three sets.
Indiana Wesleyan held a 52-41 advantage in kills.
The Lady Tigers will be at home for their next match when they host Kentucky State University at 7:00 in the Powell Athletic Center.
