MARIETTA, Ga. — Life used its outside marksmanship to scuttle an upset bid by Campbellsville as the Tigers fell tonight to the Running Eagles, 94-80.
Life (10-9, 6-1 MSC) was 9-for-22 from behind the arc and CU was unable to find its eye, hitting 46 percent from the field and 23 percent (5-for-22) from 3. An 18-for-20 night from the free throw line was one bright spot for CU.
Campbellsville (10-9, 2-5 MSC) trailed by as many as 18 in the first half when Ivan Benkovich hit his eighth first-half point.
Jalen Coates scored four points and cut that lead to 10, but David Scott stepped into a 3 and the Tigers trailed at the half, 49-38.
Life shot 55 percent from the field, 9-for-22 from the 3-point line and 15-of-20 from the free throw line.
The Running Eagles' leading scorer on the season, Dalarian Williams, picked up his second foul with 7:51 remaining in the first half, but Life never missed a beat as Jonathan Beausejour scored 11 of Life's last 22 points before intermission.
In the second half, Campbellsville was able to cut the lead to six when Coates stole a ball and went the length of the court for a layup, 68-62. But Life went on a 17-2 run and created the separation from which the Tigers could not recover.
The Running Eagles had 16 assists on their 35 made baskets and had five players to reach double figures, led by Williams' 21.
The loss negated a career night for Coates who had 25 points.
Erik Kinney had a double-double, 21 points and 14 rebounds.
The Tigers return home for a 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 game against out-of conference opponent Wilberforce University in the Powell Athletic Center.
