CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. —
Shawn Johnson came off the bench to score a new career-high 20 points and
Erik Kinney recorded his fourth-straight double-double on Monday night, as the Tigers ran past University of Maine Fort-Kent, 90-62.
Johnson finished the night hitting 8-of-10 from the floor and also hit a pair of 3s. Kinney recorded 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Both teams started at a snails pace but Campbellsville (12-9) got hot and never looked back. The Tigers were 2-of-7 from the floor to start but then hit 7-of-their-next-11 to ignite the rally.
CU also started 0-of-5 from the 3-point line but
Hagen Tyler ended that skid with back-to-back triples and a few minutes later
Jalen Coates made consecutive baskets giving the Tigers a nine-point, 28-19, lead.
The Tigers took their first double-figure lead with 3:53 left in the first half, 34-23. Then it was the
Shawn Johnson show. Johnson made back-to-back 3s to extend CU's lead to 13, 40-27.
Corey Shelton then made his first 3 of the night with time expiring, giving CU a 46-32 advantage at halftime. After starting 0-of-5 from deep, CU ended the night hitting 10 triples.
Like the first, Campbellsville started slow in the second half but Johnson ended a 2:30 drought with a jumper and scored six of the next 10 CU points.
The Bengals (19-6) were able to get the lead down to 15 with a 7-0 run but
Antonio Chapman ended the thoughts of a comeback with one of his two 3s. From the 12:07 mark to the 5:11 mark, the Bengals went scoreless and missed 12-straight field goals. During that stretch, the Tigers were 5-of-8 and extended their lead 32 points, 81-42.
In the final four minutes, coach
Brent Vernon was able to play everyone on his bench.
Herve Kouna, the newest Tigers transfer from Dartmouth, scored his first basket as a Tiger and
Italo Barbosa also chipped in with the final two points.
After struggling from the free throw line on Saturday vs. Wilberforce, CU came right back to hit 14-of-18 tonight (78%) and out-rebounded Maine Fort-Kent, 49-32. Coming in with only three subs, the Bengals were held to 22 points below their season average and CU took advantage of their limited depth by out-scoring UMFK, 38-6.
Overall, the Tiger shot 50 percent form the floor and held UMFK to 33.3 percent.
Campbellsville will now re-enter Mid-South Conference play with rival Lindsey Wilson College on Thursday night. Tipoff of the doubleheader with the Lady Tigers starts at 7 p.m. ET in Columbia, Ky. Fans can tune in on the CU Sports Network starting at 6:45 for the action.
