Efficient offense paces No. 24 Women’s Volleyball to 3-0 win at Pikeville

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A season best attacking percentage of .427 led the 24th-ranked Campbellsville women's volleyball team to its seventh-straight victory in a 3-0 win over University of Pikeville on Thursday night.

This is the first time all season the Lady Tigers (18-3, 7-2 Mid-South Conference) have hit over .400 in a match. The last time Campbellsville hit over .400 was in its first match of the NCCAA National Tournament against Cincinnati Christian University when the Lady Tigers hit .430.

Annija Abolina recorded a match-high 15 kills, while Maria Coelho recorded 13 kills on 20 attempts. Kate Harris set a new career-high with 28 assists against the Bears (5-17, 0-9 MSC) and Marcella Compeau finished with 22 digs for her fifth 20-dig performance of the season.

Campbellsville got off to a fast start against Pikeville going on an 8-2 run in the first set. Pikeville then countered with its own 8-2 run to tie the score at 10. A kill by Julia Fonseca and an ace from Ashlyn Flock regained the lead for Lady Tigers, ending the Pikeville run.

The match then went back-and-forth and it saw the Bears take its first lead at 14-13. The lead did not last long for Pikeville with Campbellsville stringing together four-straight points to force the Bears to call its second timeout of the set. The timeout killed the momentum as the Bears cut its deficit to one.

The Lady Tigers continued their stretch of late-set runs to close out the first set. With a 17-16 lead, Campbellsville ended the first set scoring eight of the final 10 points en route to a 25-18 victory.

Both team played close to start the second set as the largest lead for either team over the first nine rallies was one point and the score was tied four different times over that span. The Lady Tigers found a little breathing room and took a three-point lead two times before they hit the 10-point mark.

Campbellsville extended its advantage to as many as four points, but the Bear went on a 5-1 run and tied the set, 16-16.

Both teams played a close knit set with Campbellsville's largest lead coming at 15-11. Pikeville tied the set at 23 – which was the first tie since 10-10 – and later took its first lead, 25-24, since 4-3. Facing a set point, the Lady Tigers dug themselves out of a hole scoring three-straight points and winning the second set, 27-25.

Campbellsville compiled 17 kills on 26 attempts in the second set and had only three attacking errors to post a .538 hitting percentage during the set.

In the third stanza, Campbellsville went on a 5-1 run forcing Pikeville to call another early timeout. The timeout from the Bears did not stop the momentum for the Lady Tigers and they scored the first three points out of the timeout.

Pikeville found its grove and went on 7-1 run to pull within a point and later tied the set at 10. The Bear took their first lead of the third set three rallies later and extended their lead to 15-11. Harris' lone kill of the match put an end to the run for the Bears and sparked a run for Campbellsville that gave the Lady Tigers an 18-15 lead.

The 7-0 run from Campbellsville guided the squad to 25-21 victory in the third set to record its third-straight sweep and seventh-straight win.

The Lady Tigers recorded 49 kills against the Bears on 89 attempts and Campbellsville did not hit under .333 in any of the three sets.

Campbellsville returns home for the first time since Sept. 26 as it hosts University of the Cumberlands at 7 p.m. ET next Thursday inside Powell Athletic Center.
