PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Campbellsville women's soccer team won its fourth-straight match with 3-0 victory over Shawnee State University on Saturday night at the Shawnee Turf.
The win keeps the Lady Tigers (6-9-1, 4-1-1 Mid-South Conference) in second place in the MSC standings with one match to play.
Makayla Shearer scored twice in the victory for Campbellsville, while
Valeska Tovar added a goal for the Lady Tigers.
Neither team could find a goal in the first half-hour of play as Campbellsville had a quick flurry of chances with three shots toward goal being block by the Bears (8-5-2, 1-4-1 MSC) defense, followed by a save from Michaela Garner within a three-minute span.
The Lady Tiger offense finally broke through in the the 37th minute with a goal from Shearer, which is her fifth of the season. Just 93 seconds later, Campbellsville doubled its lead with Tovar tallying her third goal of the season to push the Lady Tigers ahead, 2-0.
Rachel McWilliams picked up the assist on the Lady Tigers' second goal of the half.
Campbellsville continued to threaten over the final minutes of the first half with
Lakin Walls forcing Garner to make a save and McWilliams had a try toward goal but she pushed her attempt wide. The Lady Tigers had a late corner kick opportunity, but nothing availed as Campbellsville held a 2-0 edge over Shawnee State at the half.
The Bears tried to flip the field in the second half as they were outshooting the Lady Tigers 4-1 with 20 minutes to play in the half. However, Campbellsville picked up another insurance goal in the 85th minute with Shearer scoring her second goal of the game to put the Lady Tigers on top, 3-0.
With less than a minute to play, Campbellsville had one more shot at goal as time was running out but
Sarah Johnston's shot went over the goal and the Lady Tigers earned a 3-0 victory.
During Campbellsville's four-match winning streak, its has allowed just one goal – coming in the 13th minute against Life – and they have shutout their last two opponents to run its shutout streak to 257:44.
The Lady Tigers are back in action on Wednesday night against No. 23 Lindsey Wilson College at home with first kick set for 6 p.m. ET from Finley Stadium.
The winner of Wednesday's matchup between Campbellsville and Lindsey Wilson will earn the No. 2 seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament. The Lady Tigers are currently ahead of Lindsey Wilson by a half-game in the MSC standings as the Blue Raiders sit at 4-2-0 in conference play.
