Comeback effort falls short as Women’s Soccer drops a 2-1 contest to Lindsey Wilson

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville women's soccer team looked to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Lady Tigers dropped a 2-1 decision to Lindsey Wilson College on Wednesday night at Finley Stadium.

Rachel McWilliams scored the lone goal for Campbellsville (6-10-1, 4-2-1 Mid-South Conference) and Amanda Howard made 12 saves against the Blue Raiders (7-5-3, 5-2-0 MSC).

Lindsey Wilson came out attacking and held possession for most of the first half. The Blue Raiders got on the board in 12th minute after Shelby Austin was on the back post and headed in a corner kick from Emma Gustafsson to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead.

The goal from the Blue Raiders ended Campbellsville's shutout streak at 269:29.

In the 41st minute, Lindsey Wilson doubled its lead after Emelie Liljered missed on her shot attempt but the the ball went off the side of her to a wide open Amara Safuan, who finished the shot and put the Blue Raiders ahead 2-0 heading into the half.

Campbellsville tried the flip the script in the second half and started to hold more possession. The Lady Tigers' best chances came in the 73rd minute when Rachel Blumfeldt beat a pair of Lindsey Wilson defenders and laced a hard shot on goal. However, Blumfeldt's shot was straight into the arms of Jovana Ivanovic.

Amanda Howard made a handful of key stops to keep the game within reach for the Lady Tigers. Campbellsville finally got on the board in the 79th minute with McWilliams' first goal of the season. McWilliams blasted a shot from 35 yards out and the ball looped over the out stretched arms of Ivanovic to cut the Lady Tiger deficit in half.

The Campbellsville goal was just its third all time against Lindsey Wilson and first since Sept. 27, 2014.

With less than 10 minutes to play the Lady Tigers had a free kick at the corner of the 18-yard box. Campbellsville's free kick rattled around the six-yard box, but the Lady Tigers could not pick up the loose ball.

Lindsey Wilson held off the late Campbellsville attempts toward goal and escaped with a 2-1 victory.

The Lady Tigers have now lost all 23 matchups against Lindsey Wilson in program history.

Campbellsville now shifts its focus to the Mid-South Conference Championship next week at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green, Ky.
