LEBANON, Tenn. – The Campbellsville women's volleyball team rallied from a set down twice and a six-point deficit in the fifth set to beat Cumberland, 3-2, on Tuesday night at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
Annija Abolina led the Lady Tigers (15-3, 5-2 Mid-South Conference) with 13 kills, while
Katie Johnson and
Maria Coelho each notched 11 kills.
Marcella Compeau finished with a match-high 22 digs. Isidora Markovic led the Phoenix (11-9, 2-4 MSC) with 17 kills and a .370 attacking percentage.
Cumberland got off to a strong start and took an early 5-1 lead over Campbellsville in the first set. The Phoenix continued to hang on to the lead until the Lady Tigers went on a 5-1 run to tie the first set at 12. Campbellsville tied the score four more times before taking its first lead of the set at 18-17.
The Lady Tigers used a 4-0 run to take a 20-17 lead and they stretched their lead to as many as four points. With Campbellsville leading 23-19, the Phoenix rattled off the final six points of the set to steal the game, 25-23.
Campbellsville flipped the script to start the second set and took and early 12-3 lead over Cumberland – capped off by a 9-0 run – forcing a timeout from the Phoenix. Despite Cumberland getting the next point after the timeout, the Lady Tigers did not let off the gas as they scored six-straight points to grab an 18-4 lead.
The Phoenix put an end to the Campbellsville run with a 6-0 run to force a timeout by the Lady Tigers. Cumberland pulled within seven points, but the Campbellsville won the set, 25-16, to tie the match.
After the Phoenix used an early 4-0 run to take a 4-1 lead over Campbellsville, the Lady Tigers countered with three-straight points and tied score, but Cumberland continued to string together runs and took a 9-5 lead.
The Phoenix continued to control the third set as they only trailed at 1-0 and 10-9, while leading led the rest of the set, en route to a 25-16 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
A back-and-forth battle broke out to start the fourth set with eight ties and five lead changes throughout. Campbellsville had its largest lead of five points at 17-12 and then 18-13. However, Cumberland put together another late set rally and pulled within, 22-21. The Lady Tigers put an end to the rally and scored the final three points to win the set, 25-21, and force the fifth set.
In the decisive fifth set, the Phoenix took the early advantage and and did not look back as they led 8-4 at the turn. Cumberland led by as many as six points, but the Lady Tigers rallied and tied the match at 13 following a 5-0 run.
Campbellsville continued the run following a Cumberland timeout and scored the final two points of the set. The Lady Tigers erased their deficit and closed the match on a 7-0 run to win the match, 3-2.
Both teams hit under .200 for the match as Campbellsville posted an attacking percentage of .171, compared to a .140 hitting clip for the Phoenix.
The Lady Tigers return to action on Thursday night with a non-conference match against Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn.
