CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The 18th-annual Lou Cunningham Classic is set for Friday and Saturday this week. The Campbellsville men's basketball team faces Oakwood University on Friday and Indiana University-Southeast on Saturday with all games taking place inside the Powell Athletic Center.
The Tigers face the Ambassadors at 3 p.m. ET on Friday followed by Lindsey Wilson College taking on the Grenadiers at 6 p.m. ET to round out the first day of the event. On Saturday, Campbellsville faces Indiana-Southeast at 4 p.m. ET and the Blue Raiders take on Oakwood at 7 p.m. ET.
Entering the Lou Cunningham, the Tigers have notched a record of 3-0 overall after sweeping the Mid-South Conference-Southern States Athletic Conference Challenge last week to start the season. At the challenge, the MSC went a combined 9-0 over the SSAC teams.
Hagen Tyler leads Campbellsville in the early portion of the season averaging 18 points per game. The Tigers have four players averaging double figures this season, while
Shawn Johnson has chipped in with 13.3 points per game, to go along with 12 points each from Tim Coleman and Andrew Smith.
Smith and Johnson have also paced Campbellsville on the glass through the first three games averaging 8.3 rebounds per game and Adam Stanford has averaged eight rebounds a contest. As a team, Campbellsville is shooting 43.6 percent from the floor, but is shooting 29.9 percent from beyond the arc. On two-point field goals, the Tigers are making 52 percent of their shots.
Oakwood is currently 4-6 on the season and faces University of North Alabama on Thursday night before taking part in the Lou Cunningham Classic. Leading the Ambassadors in scoring this season is Simeon Middleton with 15.7 points per game. Talik Talton and Ollie Felps have each notched 13.3 and 12.5 points per game, respectively. Middleton and Talton also lead Oakwood in rebounding with 5.1 rebounds per game each. As a team, the Ambassadors have shot 46.7 percent from the field, while allowing opponents shoot 47 percent from the field.
Indiana-Southeast – who is ranked 19th in NAIA Division II – comes into the classic with a record of 4-2 overall. Just before coming to Campbellsville, the Grenadiers suffered an 84-82 loss at Bellarmine University. Four players for Indiana-Southeast have notched over double figures this season with Jamie Johnson leading the way with 15.5 points and he is shooting an even 50 percent from the floor. Johnson has also chipped in with four rebounds, while Joe Jackson has notched a team-best 5.5 rebounds per game and he is second in scoring with 11.8 points a contest.
All-time, Campbellsville is 6-0 against Oakwood, but the Ambassadors and Tigers have not faced off since the 2006-07 season. Against Indiana-Southeast, Campbellsville is 27-6 all-time. Last season, the Tigers edged the Grenadiers at home, 68-61 to cap off its 2016 slate.
Opening tip on Friday is set for 3 p.m. ET on Friday against Oakwood, while Campbellsville takes on Indiana-Southeast at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.
