Johnson's near double-double leads Campbellsville past Oakwood by 40 points, 101-61

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger basketball opened the 18th Annual Lou Cunningham Classic with a 101-61 win over Oakwood University this afternoon at the Powell Athletic Center.

After Oakwood scored the first basket and took a 2-0 lead, the Tigers (4-0) took control of the final 39-plus minutes. CU finished hitting 58 percent from the floor and nailed a season-high 11 3-point baskets.

Shawn Johnson led the Tigers with 16 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. He also dished out two assists.

CU had three others in double-figures, as Hagen Tyler plashed four 3-pointers and was 5-of-9 from the floor for 14 points. Deion Evans also scored 14 and grabbed five boards in his Tiger debut. Adam Stanford was the final Tiger in double digits with 10 points.

In the first half, Campbellsville didn't miss much and hit 60 percent (24-of-40). The Tigers went ahead by double figures, 21-11, after freshman Jacob King buried his first 3 of the day. Oakwood fought back to get the lead to as little as nine with 10:53 left (22-13) but Deion Evans answered with a triple.

Evans, playing in his first game of the season for CU, finished with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and nailed two triples.

After that 3 by Evans, CU rolled the rest of the way. The Tigers finished the half on a 33-15 run and led at the break, 58-28.

In the second half, the lead remained 25-plus until Evans drilled his second 3 of the day and put Campbellsville ahead, 76-44, with 12:11 left. The Tigers kept that 30-plus point advantage until Stanford slammed home two of his 10 points to put CU ahead by 41 points, 90-49.

Campbellsville took its largest lead of 45 points, 99-54, with 3:32 left after Evans laid in his final two of the day.
