CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville's men's basketball team begins its 2017-18 campaign at the Mid-South Conference-Southern States Athletic Conference Challenge in Georgetown, Ky., from Thursday to Saturday.
The Tigers take on No. 25 Martin Methodist College at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday afternoon, followed by a 4 p.m. ET contest versus Brewton-Parker College on Friday. Campbellsville rounds out its weekend slate on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET against Bethel University.
Last week, the Tigers wrapped up its preseason slate with a 92-51 loss to Western Kentucky University in an exhibition contest in Bowling Green, Ky. Campbellsville struggled to shoot the ball in the game as it shot 30.6 percent from the floor and 25.8 percent from beyond the arc.
Tim Coleman led the Tigers with 18 points, but made 7-of-19 shot and had eight turnovers in the game.
Shawn Johnson was the only other player of Campbellsville reach double figures after making four of his six shots for 11 points. Andrew Smith grabbed 11 boards to pace the Tigers to 37 total rebounds.
As a team, Campbellsville turned the ball over 23 times, which was the most in a game in since Nov. 9, 2013 when is turned the ball over 24 times against Concordia University-Irvine.
Last season, the Tigers went 15-15 overall under
Brent Vernon – who was in his first year at the helm of the program. Campbellsville finished seventh in the MSC after going 4-10 and lost its first game in the postseason to Georgetown College, 75-70.
Martin Methodist enters the challenge with a 0-2 record after losing to Oakwood University (81-78) and Cumberland University (84-69). Van Johnson recorded a double-double in his lone appearance of the season scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 boards against Oakwood. Will Smith has averaged 15.5 points per game, while Javonte Cooper and Jemeero Spain are also scoring in double figures in the early going with 13 and 11.5 points, respectively. In two games this season, the RedHawks have compiled 21 steals.
Brewton-Parker is 1-3 on the year and picked up its first win of the season last time out against University of Virgin Islands, 70-51. Dimychael Ross is the leading scored scorer for the Barons with 14.5 points a game and is averaging a team-best seven rebounds a game. Over the first four games this season, Myles White and Isaiah Hicks have averaged double figures, with White tallying 12 point per contest and Hicks is averaging 11.3 points a game.
Bethel University started its campaign last week with wins over Mid-Atlantic Christian University and Ohio State University-Mansfield. The Wildcats rank third in the nation as they allow the opposition to score just 52.5 points per game, while also averaging 18.5 steals per game. Isaac Edmondson leads Bethel with 16 points per game and he is shooting 80 percent from the floor. Over their first two games, the Wildcats have at least 16 players recording at least a point.
Campbellsville lost to both Bethel and Martin Methodist at the challenge last season. The Tigers fell to the Wildcats, 90-77, and suffered a 67-62 loss to the RedHawks.
Friday's matchup featuring Campbellsville and Brewton-Parker is set to be the first all-time meeting between the two programs.
Tipoff on Thursday between the Tigers and Martin Methodist is set for 4 p.m. ET from Davis-Reid Alumni Gymnasium in Georgetown, Ky. Campbellsville faces Brewton-Parker at 4 p.m. ET on Friday and Bethel at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday.
