Late goal sinks Tigers in 2-1 loss to Southwestern Christian in NCCAA Semifinals

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Campbellsville's 83rd minute equalizer was not enough as Southwestern Christian University scored in the 88th to defeat the Tigers, 2-1, in the semifinals of the NCCAA Men's Soccer National Championship at Austin-Tindall Soccer Complex.

Ignacio Mangada scored the lone goal for the Tigers (14-5-2), but they fell short in the semifinals of the NCCAA National Championship after the Eagles (20-5-1) scored with 2:28 left in regulation.

Campbellsville held early offensive pressure on the Eagle recording four shots – one on goal – over the first 30 minutes of action, while Southwestern Christian only notched one shot during that span, which came in the 12th minute and was the first shot of the contest.

After the Tigers did not cash in on their early opportunities, the Eagles turned the tables and took over the offensive pressure. Over the final 15 minutes of the first half, Southwestern Christian recorded four shots, with two hitting the target.

The Eagles broke the scoreless draw in the 38th minute. Andreas Nota was shown a yellow card and on the ensuing free kick from 25 yards out Igor Stojanovic buried the shot to put Southwestern Christian on top. The goal was the first Campbellsville surrendered in the national tournament and snapped a shutout streak of 245:33.

Nota kept the Tiger deficit at one goal after recording a save with 14 seconds left in the first half as the Eagles held a 1-0 advantage at the break.

Southwestern Christian maintained the offensive pressure to open the second half, recording four shots within the first 10 minutes of the half. Nota made three stops to open the second stanza to keep it a one-goal match.

Campbellsville's offense came alive late in the match and after not connecting on its first eight shots; the Tigers found an equalizer in the 83rd minute. Mangada scored his team leading 14th goal of the season and Nathan Heath picked up his third assist of the season.

The Eagles came right back five minutes later to score the game-winning goal in the 88 minute. Lars Lowinski notched the game-winner to send Southwestern Christian to the championship with a 2-1 win over Campbellsville.

To end the contest, the Eagles out-shot the Tigers, 10-8, and Southwestern Christian had a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Nota ended the day with four total saves for Campbellsville.

The Tigers end the season with a 14-5-2 overall record.
