KISSIMMEE, Fla. — For the second straight season, Campbellsville University women's volleyball will play in the NCCAA National Championship match. The Lady Tigers defeated Emmanuel College in straight-sets on Saturday afternoon in the semifinal, 26-24, 25-17, 25-19.
It will now be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in the finals, as secod-seeded Campbellsville (31-9) will faceoff with top-seeded Biola University (27-7) at 3 p.m. ET in the Kissimmee Civic Center. Fans can follow live video and live stats at the links above.
The 31 wins for CU this season is the second-most in the
Amy Zink era, as the Lady Tigers finished with 34 in her first year in 2010. She is also the only volleyball coach in CU history to be a part of every NCCAA championship match (2009, 2010, 2016, 2017).
Today's semifinal match was about as well as Campbellsville has played the entire tournament thus far. Emmanuel College took a 13-9 lead after the Lady Tigers started with eight kills and five errors compared to eight and zero, respectively, for the Lions.
Then it was a pair of six-point runs for both squads. A 6-0 run for CU gave the Lady Tigers a 15-13 lead and forced Emmanuel to call a timeout. Then the Lions answered right back with a 6-1 run and led, 19-16.
CU rallied once more to pull the deficit to within one, 24-23, before capping off a 5-0 run to steal the opening frame, 26-24.
In the second set, Campbellsville's front line came out firing from the get-go.
Annija Abolina and
Julia Fonseca used a trio of blocks giving CU an 8-4 lead. CU pushed that lead to seven, 12-5m but a mini run by the Lions forced coach
Amy Zink to call her first timeout. Campbellsville answered out of the timeout and cruised to a 25-17 second-set win.
In the third, Emmanuel came out swinging with its season on the line. The Lions started the set on a 4-0 run but a service error got CU on the board. Campbellsville then fell victim to a couple service errors and trailed, 12-9, forcing Zink to call another timeout.
The Lady Tigers rallied, though, by doubling up the Lions with an 8-4 run to regain the lead, 17-16. CU pushed its lead to four, 21-17, and the Lions could never recover.
Abolina led CU with 11 kills, while Fonseca had 10 along with
Katie Johnson.
Maria Coelho missed double-figure kills with nine. Abolina also led CU with six blocks, while middle blocker
Olivia Jarvis carded five.
Maliyah Tela has stepped into the starting setter's role nicely after Katie Harris went down with a sprained ankle on Friday. Tela finished with 30 assists, nine digs and three blocks.
Marcella Compeau (18) and
Savannah Moss (17) led the defensive attack in digs, while CU compiled 10 total blocks.
