Lady Tigers hold No. 5 Wayland Baptist to 15 percent from deep in 65-52 win over Flying Queens

Sophomore Caitlin Hall scored nine points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds in CU's victory.

HAWAII — In a game that slithered along with 36 total fouls called, No. 3 Lady Tiger basketball held No. 5 Wayland Baptist to hitting only 14 percent from behind the 3-point line in a 65-52 win to complete the Hoop N' Surf Christmas Classic.
 
Campbellsville (12-2) finishes the Classic with a 1-1 record, while Wayland Baptist (8-1) suffers its first loss of the season. The win is CU's sixth of the year over a ranked opponent.
 
The Flying Queens came into the game ranking No. 5 in the NAIA by hitting almost 10 3-pointers per game but today CU's defense held them to 3-of-21 from deep. WBU also came in averaging 82 points per game but the Lady Tigers held them to hitting only 30 percent overall (17-of-55) and the 52 points is the lowest scoring output all season for the Flying Queens.
 
After scoring 22 points in Wednesday's loss to Menlo, Madison Clements came right back today with 19 points to lead Campbellsville. She was the lone Lady Tiger in double-figures but Caitlin Hall pitched in nine points and a career-high seven boards, while Madison Faulkner finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
 
CU dominated in the rebounding game with 43 boards compared to 32 for WBU, but the Flying Queens forced 25 turnovers and out-scored Campbellsville 24-15 in points off turnovers. The Lady Tigers forced 20 miscues.
 
Wayland Baptist scored the games first basket and ended up leading 7-6 at the first media timeout but but the Lady Tigers ended the first half on a 15-4 run sparked by Madison Kaiser. The junior from Floyds Knobs, Ind., nailed a pair of free throws to give CU its first lead, 8-7, and then buried a 3 to push the lead to 11-7 - a lead the Lady Tigers never relinquished the final 35+ minutes.
 
Clements pushed CU's lead to double figures for the first time, 21-11, with two seconds remaining on the clock.
 
With 3:50 left in the first half, Clements buried her lone 3-pointer to extend CU's lead to 16 points, 33-17. The Flying Queens would then rally to end the half and ended up out-scoring CU in the second quarter, 16-13.
 
Wayland Baptist finished the half on a 10-1 run and cut the Campbellsville lead to seven, 34-27.
 
The third quarter was turned back into Campbellsville's favor. Midway through the third, CU led 46-37 but the Lady Tigers went on a quick 7-0 run after baskets by Savannah Gregory, Caitlin Hall and Faulkner and a free throw by Clements.
 
Wayland Baptist was able whittle the deficit to nine, 57-48, but Hall scored four of the final eight points to help Campbellsville seal the victory.
 
Campbellsville will now have eight days in between contests, as the Lady Tigers host University of Mobile on Friday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. ET and Stillman College on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 7:00 to finish non-conference play.
