TALLADEGA, Ala. — Fighting a hostile and high-energy environment tonight, newly-ranked No. 3 Campbellsville women's basketball held Talladega College scoreless for almost four minutes in the fourth quarter and ran away with an 80-62 victory on Tuesday night.
The Lady Tigers improve to 10-1 overall and finished hitting 49 percent (30-of-62) from the floor. Talladega hit only 23-of-57 (40%) overall with eight of them 3-point baskets. The Tornadoes also out-rebounded CU, 39-33, but it was Campbellsville's defense once again picking up the offense and causing havoc as the Lady Tigers forced 28 turnovers.
Madison Clements scored 13 points to pace CU, while
Jordan Doram and
Lauren Turner both pitched in 12 and
Lexxus Graham scored 11.
Madison Faulkner also had a stellar ending to the game with nine of the final 15 CU points in the fourth quarter.
Stewart led the rebounding game by matching her career-high nine boards.
Deshanna Cook led the Tornadoes with a career-high 29 points on 11-of-17 from the floor and hitting a career-high seven 3-point baskets.
Trailing 9-8 with 6:29 left in the opening quarter, CU's leading scorer
Savannah Gregory fell victim to a pair of charging calls and had to go to the bench the rest of the half with two fouls. Clements picked up the slack, though, and scored six straight points on a pair of step-back jumpers and two free throws to push CU ahead, 20-14. Turner capped the run by CU with another pair of freebies to push CU's lead to eight, 22-14, at the end of the opening quarter.
That duo worked together to push CU out to a 12-0 run, as Clements found Turner for a backdoor to start the second quarter and giving CU a 26-14 lead.
Then it was Talladega's turn. The Tornadoes answered right back with a 10-4 run and cut the lead to 30-24 with 5:00 left in the second quarter. Graham then nailed her second triple and
Madison Kaiser put CU ahead by 13, 41-28, with a 19-foot jumper with 1:10 left in the half.
Talladega's Lyric Jordan cut the lead to 11, 41-30, with a jumper to end the half.
The Lady Tigers opened their lead to 16 points, 46-30, after Clements nailed her lone 3-pointer of the night with 7:50 on the clock in the third.
Talladega had one final charge in them, though. The Tornadoes went on a 21-11 run and cut the lead to seven, 57-51, with 1:24 left in the third.
But Turner sparked CU with her second 3-pointer of the night and Stewart stymied the Talladega offense in the fourth quarter by taking four charges, which helped CU hold the Tornadoes scoreless from the 5:51 mark until 2:21 was left in the game.
During that span, the Lady Tigers went on a 9-0 run and pushed their lead to 20 points, 76-56. Also in the span, Faulkner scored nine of the final 15 points for Campbellsville.
The Lady Tigers will now take a 10-day break before hosting Hiwassee College on Saturday, Dec. 16. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET in the Powell Athletic Center.
