HENDERSON, Tenn. —
Andrew Smith's career night sparked No. 21 Campbellsville men's basketball to an 84-76 win over Freed-Hardeman on the road tonight.
Smith, a Johnson City, Tenn. product, hit 11-of-14 from the floor, including 4-fo-5 from the 3-point line, to score a career-high 27 points. He also grabbed eight boards and matched a career-high with three blocks in the win.
Hagen Tyler also pitched in double figures with 17 points and hit five Edward Jones 3-point baskets in 36 minutes of play.
CU will gladly bid farewell to Freed-Hardeman's Marcus Baldwin after he lit up the Tigers in the two matchups this season. The senior guard scored 31 points tonight on 13-of-17 shooting and has pitched in 65 points in the two contests this year.
Campbellsville improves to 12-1 overall after hitting 46 percent from the floor (31-of-68). The Lions (2-6) out-shot the Tigers from the floor, hitting 47 percent (30-of-64) but Campbellsville hit eight more 3-point baskets.
The Tigers have hit 10 or more 3-point baskets in seven games this season, winning all seven. Also, after hitting 16 triples vs. Alice Lloyd on Tuesday night, CU has hit 31 in the last two games.
Freed-Hardeman scored the games' first basket but the Lions never regained the lead the rest of the night. Smith found
Tim Coleman in the right corner for his first triple and the Tigers led 3-2.
Smith played a hand in the first 11 points for Campbellsville. He found
Jalen Coates for a jumper, capitalized on an old-fashioned 3-point play and then hit his first 3-pointer of the night to put CU ahead, 11-5 at the 15:48 mark.
Smith ended up pushing the CU lead to double figures for the first time, 33-23, with 5:12 left after nailing yet another triple. Coleman pushed the Tigers lead to 13, 36-23, on the next possession after converting yet another old-fashioned 3-point play.
Freed-Hardeman was able to double-up the Tigers in the final 4:43 with a 12-6 run and cut CU's lead to seven, 42-35, at halftime.
Campbellsville opened the second half just like the first. This time it was Tyler hitting a pair of triples and Coates adding another to push CU's lead back to double-figures, 51-40.
The CU lead fluctuated from 11 points, to seven back to nine, until
Jacob King buried one of his two 3-pointers at the 9:12 mark pushing the Tigers ahead, 64-54.
That's when Tyler started to get hot. He splashed a pair of 3-pointers giving CU a 70-61 lead but Freed-Hardeman had one final push left in them.
The Lions went on a 7-3 run and forced coach
Brent Vernon to call a timeout. Out of the break, guess who sparked CU?
Andrew Smith. He banged a triple to push the Tigers ahead, 76-70, and a few moments later Tyler found some breathing room in the corner to hit his fifth 3 and extend CU's advantage back to seven, 79-72, with 1:50 left.
The Tigers finished the game on an 8-4 run but the dagger came with 30 seconds left, as Smith sank his final triple to put the icing on the cake.
Duke Robinson made a pair of free throws to seal the game at the end.
Campbellsville will now have seven days to prepare for the Lindsey Wilson Classic. The Tigers will travel to Columbia, Ky. to face Taylor University on Friday, Dec. 15. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
