Strong pitching, timely hitting and taking advantage of Midway miscues, lead Tigers to 8-1 win

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Logan Roberts hit a 3-run home run in the fourth inning, while Campbellsville took advantage of five walks and three Midway University errors to take down the Eagles, 8-1.

The Tigers (3-1) scored a pair of crooked number innings in the third and fifth, while Midway (0-5) was only able to scratch one run on five hits against five CU pitchers.

Roberts led CU with the lone hit but drove in three runs. Hunter Christiansen and Matthew Valdez both registered multi-hit games going 2-for-3. Valdez also drove in a run and scored another from the nine-hole.

After allowing 15 walks in three games during the opening weekend, the Tigers pitching staff was spectacular on Tuesday afternoon.

Dexter Cline (1-0) picked up the win after taking over for DJ Wilson in the fifth inning. Wilson started on the hill and went four strong frames, allowing just three hits and one earned run. Cline allowed two hits in two innings and struck out one Eagle.

Dillon Day, Jared Welander and Nick Johnston all pitched one frame apiece in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, respectively. In the final three innings, Welander allowed the only walk of the day, as Day and Johnston went 1-2-3 to sit down the Eagles. Besides the lone walk, Welander struck out the side to close the eighth inning.

Midway scratched the games first run in the third inning. Reid Battles and Barrett Croslin delivered one-out singles and Battles came all the way to score on a fielders choice by Danny McGuire. But Riley Joyce threw out McGuire trying to steal second base to end the Midway threat.

CU answered right back in the bottom half and took advantage of two walks and two errors by the Eagles. Valdez reached with a one-out walk and advanced to third on an errant pick off attempt by DJ Lewis (0-1). David Montoya grounded to the third basemen Barrett Croslin but his wild throw home scored Valdez and set up the big inning.

Romello Carbuccia reached on the second walk of the inning and Roberts made Midway pay with his first home run as a Tigers – a missile over the leftfield fence.

After Wilson pitched a 1-2-3 fourth inning, the Tigers came right back out and scored once again. Marlor Villafana and Riley Joyce started the rally with singles before Valdez reached with a sac bunt attempt but nobody covered first base.

With bases loaded and zero outs, the Tigers had another prime opportunity to blow the game open but Midway doubled-off Valdez on a Montoya sac fly that scored Villafana. Then Carbuccia struck out to end the threat.

Cline entered in the fifth inning and sat Midway down in order to set up another big inning for Campbellsville. Midway's Anibal Salado was unable to get out of the inning after an RBI by Brett Hamilton scored Carlos Garmendia and Villafana delivered a sac fly to score Garmendia. Valdez then scored another run with a two-out single scoring Hamilton.

Campbellsville will now host Huntington University on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
