PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — With three weeks left in the regular season, Campbellsville basketball hits the hardwood for their final road swing of the season this week. The Tigers and Lady Tigers travel to Portsmouth, Ohio for the first of two road games to face Shawnee State University on Thursday night.
Tipoff for women's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and the men's game will follow at 8:00.
Matt Payton will broadcast both games live on 88.7 The Tiger and the Tunein Radio App. Shawnee State will provide live video and stats via the Shawnee State Sports Network at the links above.
No. 9 Lady Tigers (23-4, 8-3 MSC) vs. No. 5 Shawnee state (25-2, 10-1 MSC)
The Lady Tigers have not faired well in the Frank and Janis Waller Gymnasium in the
Ginger Colvin era. In nine trips to Portsmouth, the Lady Tigers have only won twice – both of those coming in back-to-back years in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Campbellsville is coming in after winning three-straight games over No. 19 Cumberland University, University of the Cumberlands and No. 23 Pikeville. Campbellsville has also won 15 of its last 17 games – the lone two losses coming to then-No. 10 Shawnee state (83-75) and then-No. 4 Lindsey Wilson (77-72).
Emily Fox leads CU by averaging just shy of 15 points per game. She became the 33
rd Lady Tiger to score 1,000 points in her career on Jan. 28 vs. Wilberforce. Fox actually got her career started at Shawnee State in 2015 by coming off the bench to score 14 points in the final 10 minutes. She ranks No. 7 in the NAIA by making 2.8 triples per game and No. 6 with 75 made 3-point baskets.
In the last seven games,
Madison Stewart has been a catalyst for CU after being inserted into the starting lineup. Stewart has scored in double-figures in seven of the last eight games with a season-high 17 vs. UPIKE on Feb. 11. She is averaging 13.2 points per game in the last four and has added much needed depth to the forward position with
Abby Miller and
Jordan Doram.
Shawnee State is led by Jonessa Moore's 19.6 points per game and she is followed with a trio of Bears scoring in double-figures – Brandy Snow (13.2), Madison Ridout (13.1) and Baily Cummins (11.2).
Moore has been named the MSC Player of the Week twice but was held to single-figure scoring in two of the last three games – vs. WVU Tech and Georgetown (9 points apiece). Moore has flipped that by scoring 30-plus points three times – vs. Midway (32), Campbellsville (31) and Cumberlands (32). She ranks No. 3 in the NAIA by shooting 58 percent from the floor and scoring 530 points this season. Her 19.6 points per game ranks her seventh in the country.
Since losing to Bethel, 84-80 in overtime in the MSC-Southern States Challenge in the Powell Athletic Center, the Bears have won 11 of their 12 games. Besides Bethel, the Bears lost to Lindsey Wilson, 84-78.
Tigers (12-13, 2-8 MSC) vs. Shawnee state (7-12, 1-10 MSC)
On the men's side, both Campbellsville and Shawnee State are playing for seeding in the Mid-South Conference Tournament. Both teams can finish anywhere from sixth to eighth in the standings, as both are sitting seventh and eighth, respectively.
The Bears and Tigers are meeting for the 21
st time with CU leading the series 13-7. Campbellsville defeated the Bears early in January with a 79-71 victory on Jan. 14. In that matchup, Rod Lawrence scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed seven boards.
Campbellsville is also entering Thursday by winning five-straight games over the Bears.
Sophomore
Hagen Tyler leads CU by scoring 13.4 points per game. With the five overtime game last week vs. Cumberlands, Tyler has played in 105 total minutes the last two games and did not hit a 3 in Saturday's game vs. UPIKE. He is followed by
Erik Kinney's 11.7 points and 10 rebounds a game. Like Tyler, Kinney is entering Thursday after his lowest scoring output of the year with four points vs. the Bears.
For the first time in his career,
Elliott Young is coming off consecutive 20-point games. He also became the 30
th Tiger to score 1000 points in a career with 23 vs. Cumberlands last week.
Shawnee State enters after losing eight of its last nine games. The Bears did knock off then-No. 2 Georgetown College, 78-72, at home on Feb. 4. But Shawnee State is coming in after losing at Life University, 83-70, on Saturday.
Jayllen Carter leads SSU by averaging 15.4 points per game, while Frederick Moore is scoring 13.7 points and leading the Bears with 7.4 rebounds per game.
