HARDEEVILLE, S.C. —
Rebecca Miller delivered in both games of a Day 1 doubleheader today at the NAIA Southern Challenge hosted by the University of South Carolina-Beaufort.
Campbellsville (2-0) channeled some of the vibe it remembered from a two-years-ago NAIA Opening Round title, to sweep Bryan College, 8-3, and No. 16 Reinhardt University, 2-1.
Miller had three hits and two RBI in the first game and her sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh in the second game scored
Jacqueline Roof for that game winner.
GAME 1 – Campbellsville 8, Bryan 3
Campbellsville got four strong innings from
Neely Quint (1-0) and solo homers by
Rebecca Miller,
Madison Mudd and
Tori Humphrey to turn back the Lions (2-3), 8-3.
Quint was touched up in the bottom of the first after the Lady Tigers (1-0) took a one-run lead off Miller's home run. But Quint settled in and pitched four shutout innings.
Quint gave up three hits, walked one and struck out three. She saw relief help from
Rachel Denkins. Denkins pitched two scoreless innings, striking out two while allowing two hits to record a save.
After falling behind 3-1 on a three-run homer by Becca Zimmerman in the bottom of the first, CU whittled away at that lead.
Hailey Szpila led off the second with a walk and scored when Humphrey's fly ball to short was misplayed. Then CU took the lead for good (4-3) in the top of the third when Mudd parked a one-out home run and
Mia Aldridge's single scored Miller.
Campbellsville waited until the fifth to pick up another run, when a bases-loaded error scored
Jacqueline Roof who led off the inning with a single. Then in the sixth, Humphrey's solo home run fueled a three-run frame. Miller's third hit, a double, scored Mudd and
Brianna Scott's single scored Miller.
Miller was 3-for-4 for the game with two RBIs and three runs scored. Mudd also had a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-3 and two runs scored.
GAME 2 – Campbellsville 2, Reinhardt 1
Morgan Gailor (1-0) picked up the third win of her career with a six-hitter over No. 16 Reinhardt (2-2). The sophomore from Louisville worked out of serious jams in the first and fifth innings. She walked three but struck out five. None of them were any bigger than her K to end the fifth with two Eagles aboard.
Jacqueline Roof homered to start the game, but after that CU's offense locked up until a Roof double to lead off the seventh. A sacrifice bunt by
Madison Mudd led to Miller's game-winning sac fly to left.
Roof had three hits in the game with only
Brianna Scott,
Mia Aldridge and
Brittany Rippy reaching safely after that.
Campbellsville left eight runners stranded, three in the first inning and two more in the third when the Lady Tigers had runners on first and second and no outs.
The Lady Tigers return to action in the NAIA Southern Challenge Friday, Feb. 17 when they meet Thomas University at 3 p.m. followed by a matchup with the host school USC-Beaufort at 5:30.
