CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The Tiger pitching staff allowed one run in a doubleheader sweep of Huntington University on Saturday afternoon, as Campbellsville won 10-1 and 7-0.
Campbellsville (6-2) wins its second straight series of the year after taking a three-game series over Freed-Hardeman last weekend.
Jhonbert Gonzalez (1-0),
Dexter Cline and
Dillon Day combined to throw seven innings and did not allow a run until the final frame. In addition, the trio allowed just one walk and struck out four.
In game two, it was
Nick Johnston and
DJ Wilson (1-0) tossing a three-hit shutout with a combined eight strikeouts.
David Montoya led CU at the plate going 4-of-7 with four runs scored, one RBI and two stolen bases.
Game one: Campbellsville 10, Huntington 1
CU countered the strong performance on the mound with a big day at the plate.
David Montoya led CU going 3-for-5 with an RBI and started the scoring in the first with a leadoff double.
Clay Valenzuela-Reece and
Romello Carbuccia both reached to load the bases and
Riley Joyce was walked to score the game's first run.
Logan Roberts then put CU ahead 3-0 with a two-run double.
The Tigers scratched another run in the fourth, as Matt Valdez reached on one of the 15 errors by Huntington on the weekend. He came around to score on a fake bunt-steal with Montoya and
Clay Valenzuela-Reece.
The flood gates opened in the fifth inning, as Tyson Dietrich (0-1) relieved starter DJ Moore and lasted only 2/3 of an inning. CU brought 11 batters to the plate and took advantage of three straight walks to score six runs.
Andrew Deleon, pinch-running for
Diego Reynoso, scored the first run with a walk to
Kirby Broadbent and
Jose Castro came around to score on a walk to Matt Valdez. Montoya delivered a single to score two runs and Valenzuela-Reece scored another on a fielders choice.
Cline came in to pitch the sixth inning and allowed a pair of singles but got out of the jam with a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.
Dillon Day allowed a couple of singles and a run in the last inning, but had a little wiggle room to work with.
Game two: Campbellsville 7, Huntington 0
Johnston only tossed the first two innings but Wilson relived him in the third and shut the door on Huntington for the final five frames.
The duo allowed just three hits and struck out a combined eight batters to set the tone.
Montoya once again started the Tigers' scoring in the first inning with a leadoff single and came around to score on a Carbuccia sacrifice fly.
CU plated another pair of runs in the second inning after a leadoff single by Roberts came around to score on a suicide squeeze-turned base hit by Valdez.
Marlor Villafana walked and came around to score on another fake bunt-steal by CU.
Three insurance runs were scored in the fifth inning capped by a
Logan Roberts' sac fly to score Carbuccia. Valdez came around to score the final run in the sixth.
Campbellsville will now have six days to prepare for Bryan College and Tennessee Wesleyan. The Tigers and Bulldogs play a nine-inning game on Friday, Feb. 24 and a doubleheader vs. Bryan on Saturday, Feb. 25. CU will then cap the road-swing with another nine-inning game vs. Tennessee Wesleyan on Sunday, Feb. 26.
