HARDEEVILLE, S.C. —
Brianna Scott's home run in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the game-winner against Faulkner University this afternoon and allowed Campbellsville to escape with a split of on Day 3 of the NAIA Southern Challenge hosted by the University of South Carolina-Beaufort.
The Lady Tigers (3-3) struggled at the plate today, collecting only 10 hits in two games, five each against William Carey University and Faulkner.
GAME 1 –William Carey 7, Campbellsville 4
When you score four runs on only one hit you begin to think it might be your day. But No. 10 William Carey (8-1) had other thoughts by hammering 11 hits and using four CU miscues to rally for a 7-4 win.
Brianna Scott was hit by a pitch to lead off the second inning and ended up scoring on a wild pitch.
Then in the third,
Brittany Rippy was hit by another pitch and
Jacqueline Roof promptly parked one in center and CU led, 3-0.
Madison Mudd reached on an error and scored when Scott reached on an error later in the frame.
But after that it was all William Carey as they scored three in the third off six hits and four in the fourth on three hits.
Neely Quint (1-2) was chased in the fourth after giving up 10 hits, but did fall victim to the four errors.
Rachel Denkins pitched 2.2 innings of one-hit ball.
GAME 2 – Campbellsville 2, Faulkner 0
In a pitcher's duel, Faulkner (2-6) broke first and it was the difference in the game.
Morgan Gailor (2-1) worked her way around four errors to throw her first shutout, a two-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Scott's sixth inning home run, her first of the season, proved to be the difference.
Mia Aldridge reached on an error and
Kalin Bottoms scored the insurance run when
Hailey Szpila's shot to center was misplayed.
The Lady Tigers return to action Friday, Feb. 24 when they host Taylor University in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Park.
