CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The Lady Tigers waited a little late to try an steal a second game from Taylor University and ended up splitting with the Trojans today at Veterans Memorial Park.
Campbellsville (4-4) won the first game 11-1 and then had the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh inning of the second game, but could not push across the tying run, losing 7-6.
Taylor (5-2) had three two-run innings and held on for the 7-6 win.
GAME 1 – Campbellsville 11, Taylor 1
Morgan Gailor picked up her second straight win and the Lady Tigers run-ruled Taylor 11-1 on
Jacqueline Roof's triple with no outs in the bottom of the fifth.
Gailor (3-1) pitched a three-hitter, allowing a single to Justice Carmichael in the third and a double to Courtney Moriarty in the second, that scored Taylor's only run, and a leadoff double in the fifth to Carmichael.
CU had three home runs that scored half their runs.
Markie Smith teed off on one in the first inning with Roof and
Brianna Scott aboard that gave Campbellsville a 3-0 lead.
After Taylor closed the gap to 3-1 in the second, Lady Tiger bats went to work again.
Mia Aldridge parked a two-out four-bagger in the third and CU plated three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.
In the fourth,
Alexis Smith led off the inning with her first career home run and Roof double home
Tori Humphrey before Roof scored on Scott's single.
Then in the fifth, Taylor could not get an out before Roof's triple scored
Hailey Szpila, A. Smith and Humphrey, all of whom singled.
A. Smith, Roof, Scott and Humphrey had two-hit games. Szpila, M. Smith and
Brittany Rippy all reached safely once.
GAME 2 – Taylor 7, Campbellsville 6
Campbellsville stranded 12 runners and two different pitchers gave up 14 hits to the Trojans.
Neely Quint (1-3) was chased after two complete innings, giving up four runs and seven hits.
Rachel Denkins allowed eight hits the rest of the way along with three runs.
Taylor led 5-0 before CU could dent the scoring column with a solo run in the bottom of the fifth. Consecutive walks to
Jacqueline Roof,
Madison Mudd and
Brianna Scott led to a run when
Tori Humphrey reached on an error at second. But the Lady Tigers would strand three.
Things got interesting in the sixth when Campbellsville sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four times on five hits, a two-run double by Roof and a two-run home run by Mudd.
Brittany Rippy had a double in the inning and Scott singled.
After Denkins set Taylor down in the top of the seventh,
Hailey Szpila led off the bottom with a double to center.
Tori Humphrey singled and took second on an error in center field. Rippy sacrificed home a run and that brought Roof to the plate.
But with two doubles and a single already in the game, Taylor chose to intentionally walk Roof . Mudd drew a full-count walk to load the bases and Scott's grounder to third ended the threat.
The Lady Tigers are back in action Saturday, Feb. 25 when they host Olivet Nazarene in a noon doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Park.
