Tigers dominate the paint in final non-conference win over Wilberforce, 88-63

WILBERFORCE, Ohio — The Tigers outscored Wilberforce University 50-36 in the second half and used a 17-3 run in that frame to out-pace the Bulldogs 88-63 on Monday night.
 
Combined with just five points in the first half, Hagen Tyler and Jalen Coates lit it up in the second with 25 of the Tigers 50 points.

Campbellsville improves its record to 15-13 overall with the final non-conference matchup of the season.

After holding the Bulldogs to just 30 percent from the floor in the first half, Wilberforce cut the lead to four points, 38-34, three minutes in to the second period. Campbellsville ended up going on a 14-3 run and put the lead back to a comfortable mark, 52-37.

After the Bulldogs cut the deficit back to 10 points, 52-42, with 12:26 left, Byron Dean got hot for CU and started a rally of seven-straight baskets for the Tigers. Dean hit one of his three second-half 3s and was followed with four points by Tyler and consecutive 3s by Zach Perry to put CU ahead by its largest margin of the night, 67-42.

Campbellsville ended up making 11-of-12 baskets in a row and extended its lead to 25 once again, 81-56, after Rod Lawrence scored one of his eight points on the night. Lawrence led the Tigers on the boards with 12 rebounds, as CU out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 45-29. Lawrence also sniffed a triple double with seven assists.  

In addition, CU dominated the paint by out-scoring Wilberforce, 46-22, inside the blocks.

Coates led the Tigers with 16 points and Tyler finished with 14 along with Erik Kinney. Kinney also grabbed 10 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season.

After scoring 19 points in an earlier matchup, 76-70 win for CU, Patrick Mitchell was held to six points tonight, hitting just 1-of-9 from the floor.
 
Campbellsville will now play its final regular season game, as the Tigers welcome Life University to the Powell Athletic Center. The Running Eagles have already claimed the Mid-South Conference regular season title but CU is fighting for a six-seed in the MSC tournament. Tipoff of the doubleheader with the Lady Tigers starts at 2pm ET and fans can tune in at 2:45 with Jay Turner and Matt Payton with the call on the CU Sports Network.
