Prybylek’s gem, home runs by Montoya and Castro deliver upset bid over No. 4 Tennessee Wesleyan

ATHENS, Tenn. — Nick Przybylek pitched six strong innings and struck out seven Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs, while David Montoya and Jose Castro both delivered home runs in the Tigers upset bid, 8-4.

Przybylek (2-1) had moments of brilliance on the hill for the Tigers (8-2), while allowing only three earned runs all day – all of those coming in the fifth inning for the fourth-ranked Bulldogs (6-7). Malik Evans, who is expected to start tomorrow vs. Bryan College, pitched on inning in relief, while DJ Wilson tossed the final two. The Tigers pitching staff struck out 12 Bulldogs combined.

Clay Valenzuela-Reece has been on a tear of late and today wasn't any different. He went 4-for-6, while Matt Valdez was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Riley Joyce and Diego Reynoso also compiled multi-hit games with two knocks.

The Tigers struck first and never looked back in the first inning. With two outs, Romello Carbuccia took advantage of a dropped fly ball by Alex Balter and CU loaded the bases. Reynoso was plunked and that ended up scoring the games first run in Carbuccia.

In the second, CU wasted little time to extend that lead. Joyce doubled down the left field line and was followed with a Valdez double to deep right field. Montoya then delivered his first-career home run to put the Tigers ahead 3-0. CU looked like it would scratch a few more in the second but Tennessee Wesleyan starter Chris Washington (1-1) calmed down to retire the side.

Washington finished with five innings of work, allowing six hits and four runs – three of them were earned. He also struck out five.

The bats awoke in the fifth for Tennessee Wesleyan. Malik Stephens started the rally with a single and was followed with another by Pedro Barrios to put runners on the corners with one out. A passed ball by the catcher Joyce allowed one run to score and Collin Ridout turned on a 1-0 pitch for his fifth home run – cutting CU's lead to one, 4-3.

But the Tigers answered right back in the sixth. Brantley Flanagan entered for Washington on the bump and Joyce delivered a leadoff single. Valdez then picked up his second double od the day to score pinch runner Jose Castro.

The Bulldogs answered with a run in the eighth inning off Wilson but it was Castro's pinch hit three-run long ball that gave Campbellsville a little insurance and a more comfortable lead, 8-4.

Campbellsville will now travel to Bryan College for a doubleheader starting on Saturday, Feb. 25 starting at 1 p.m. ET. Fans can follow live stats and video – which can be found above.
