Rippy's three-run homer highlights a Lady Tiger sweep of Union

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville (13-7) banged out 18 hits in a double header with Union today at Veterans Memorial Park and swept the Bulldogs, 10-4 and 13-5.

Brittany Rippy's three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth run-ruled Union in the second game. Rippy, a senior from Scottsville, had five RBIs in the game.

Rachel Denkins picked up her first win of the season in the circle with four innings of relief work.

GAME 1 –Campbellsville 10, Union 4

Campbellsville picked up a couple of runs in the bottom of the first after no-out singles by Jacqueline Roof and Madison Mudd, but squandered a potential big inning when Alexis Smith was thrown out at home trying to score on a wild pitch.

Morgan Gailor got in trouble in the top of the second when she loaded the bases with a two-out walk. Chandler Overton beat out an infield single and Union went up, 3-2.

The Bulldogs added a run in the third when they loaded the bases on a one-out error and two singles. A passed ball scored their fourth run.

The Lady Tiger retook the lead, 5-4, in the fourth on three hits and an error at first base that allowed two runs home. Markie Smith singled home Brianna Scott for the first run of the inning and then Jacqueline Roof's grounder to second was misplayed by Haley Lyell and Smith and Brittany Rippy scored.

A leadoff home run by Mia Aldridge, her third of the season, opened the floodgates for CU. The Lady Tigers tagged on four more runs in the frame and led 10-4.

Rachel Denkins (1-0) came on in relief of Gailor in the top of the fourth and pitched four innings of two-hit ball. Gailor walked three batters and gave up five hits.

Roof, Scott and Markie Smith all had two-hit games, led by Roof's three RBIs. Tori Humphrey and Markie Smith had two RBIs apiece.

GAME 2 – Campbellsville 13, Union 5

Neely Quint (7-4) worked around a 10-hitter and the Lady Tigers got early run production to sweep Union with a 13-5 second-game win.

Campbellsville led 4-0 at the end of two only to see Union close the gap to 4-3 with two in the third and one in the fourth.

CU got a run in the first on a fielder's choice by Scott, an RBI-single by Hailey Szpila and another run on a wild throw from Union's catcher. It became 4-0 in the second when Roof's sac fly plated Markie Smith, who had received a free pass.

The game broke wide open in the fifth when Campbellsville scored four more times on three hits and an error.

Union score twice in the sixth on four hits, but the Lady Tigers used Rippy's first home run of the season — a three-run shot — to extend the lead to 13-5.

CU was led at the plate by Rippy's three hits. Hailey Szpila had two hits in the eight-hit CU attack.

The Lady Tigers travel to Portsmouth, Ohio this weekend for a four-game series with the Shawnee State Bears — games Saturday, March 18 (2 and 4 p.m.) and Sunday, March 19 (2 and 4 p.m.).
