FRANKFORT, Ky. — For the first time since 2007, Lady Tiger basketball falls in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament, losing 62-59 to University of the Cumberlands.
The Lady Tigers (25-6) now have just a 2-6 record vs. Cumberlands (15-14) in the MSC Tournament. The Patriots, who came in averaging just five 3-point baskets a game, nailed eight tonight, while Campbellsville hit 2-of-15 (13 percent).
Emily Fox led all scorers with 15 points and hit the lone two 3s for CU.
Madison Stewart finished with 11 points but eight of those came in the first 4:31 of the opening quarter.
Abby Miller led all rebounders with nine.
Ashley Jackson, Kayla Bruner and Megan Morton all nailed multiple 3-pointers, while Jackson led the way and hit three for UC. Cheyenne Madden, who averages 15 points per game, was in foul trouble all night but put the Patriots up for good with 53 seconds remaining. Madden scored her only bucket of the night – an and-one opportunity and converted the free throw to push UC ahead, 58-57.
On the ensuing possession, the Lady Tigers turned the ball over – one of their 17 of the game – and Morton nailed two free throws to put Cumberlands ahead by three, 60-57.
Campbellsville had a chance to tie the game twice down the stretch but came up short on both opportunities.
Madison Clements was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 10 seconds left, but she missed the first and made the final two to cut into the lead, 60-59.
CU fouled Morton again with eight seconds left but she nailed two more free throws. The Patriots finished the night hitting 8-of-9 from the charity stripe, while CU hit 11-of-18 (61%).
Emily Fox had an open 3 with two seconds left but missed to seal the first upset in the tournament.
Campbellsville came out hot in the opening quarter, as Stewart scored eight-straight points in a span of two minutes. But with CU leading 16-7 after the first, Cumberlands out-scored CU in the remaining three quarters to pull the upset.
The Lady Tigers had their largest lead of 11 points, 29-18, with 1:51 left in the first quarter. CU was able to extend that to 10 points to start the third but Cumberlands went on a 10-2 run and cut the deficit to two, 42-40, with 3:21 left in the frame.
The Patriots ended up trying the game at 46 after Bruner his one of her two 3-pointers and led 53-51.
Lauren Turner, who led CU with four assists, hits three-consecutive jumpers and gave Campbellsville a 57-53 lead with 2:44 left.
Cumberlands had one final charge late, going on a 9-2 run, as Campbellsville's only points in the final 2:44 came at the free throw line from Clements.
The win moves six-seed Cumberlands into the semifinal to face No. 2-seeded Lindsey Wilson College.
Campbellsville's season is still alive as the Lady Tigers will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Tournament in Billings, Mont. Starting March 15.
