Gailor and Quint team up to sweep Cumberland University in Mid-South Conference series

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Morgan Gailor and Neely Quint teamed up to allow only four Cumberland University runs and the Lady Tigers offense scored five in each game to sweep the Mid-South Conference doubleheader.

In the 5-0 win in game one, Gailor (8-3) twirled a gem by allowing only four hits in a complete-game shutout. The Lady Tigers scored one in the first inning, three runs in the second and added an insurance run in the fifth.

Jacqueline Roof and Markie Smith both recorded a pair of hits and drove in one run a piece.

In game two, the Lady Tigers won 5-4 and the CU pitching staff had to hold off a late rally by the Phoenix. Neely Quint, the reigning MSC Pitcher of the Week, pitched five strong innings before allowing a pair of Cumberland runs in the sixth to bring the Phoenix within on run. But Cumberland made it interesting in the seventh but Gailor worked out the jam to earn her first save of the year.

Quint went six innings, allowed eight hits and four earned runs while striking out one.

Offensively, Mia Aldridge had two of the five hits for CU.

With the wins, Campbellsville improves to 18-7 overall and 6-0 in the Mid-South. Cumberland falls to 11-13 and 1-5 in the MSC.

Game one: Campbellsville 5, Cumberland 0
The Lady Tigers scratched one run in the first inning and three in the second to jump on Cumberland. It all started with a leadoff hit by pitch to Roof and she scored on an RBI double by Aldridge.

In the second, Tori Humphrey, the reigning MSC Player of the Week, doubled to right field to start the rally. Markie Smith delivered an RBI single and was followed with a Roof base knock to score the second run. Madison Mudd then crashed her third home run of the season with a solo shot to left field.

Cumberland finished with only four hits in game one but had an opportunity to punch a few runs across in the third inning after a CU error. Tyra Graham singled and Jocelyn Hernandez reached on an error but Gailor got two-hitter Tessa Tomasello to pop up to end the threat.

In the fifth inning, the Phoenix had another opportunity but a heads up defensive play by Gailor ended the threat. Hernandez doubled and Courtney Miles reached on a walk to put runners on the corners with one out but Gailor snagged a comebacker to cut down Hernandez at home.

In the seventh, CU used another defensive play to end the game. Kayala Hoppenjans was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Graham then singled to right to put runners on second and third with one out. But Imani Torregano grounded to Humphrey at third base for a regular 5-3 groundout but Hoppenjans attempted to sneak behind the throw and score but Hailey Szpila gunned her down at home to end the game.

Game two: Campbellsville 5, Cumberland 4
Cumberland struck first in the third inning after another leadoff hit by pitch. Hernandez delivered a sacrifice fly to score Hoppenjans.

The lead didn't last long for Cumberland, though. Brittany Rippy reached on an error and Roof reached on a walk to put runners on first and second. CU played small ball and Mudd advanced both runners with a sac bunt. The Lady Tigers stayed with the bunt, as Mia Aldridge delivered a suicide squeeze and caught the Phoenix defense napping. Alexis Smith then used an RBI ground out to put CU ahead, 2-1.

The Lady Tigers added another two runs in the fourth. Humphrey doubled and came around to score on another squeeze-bunt by Rippy. Rippy advanced all the way to third after an errant throw and stolen base and came around to score on a Roof sacrifice fly.

With CU now leading 5-1, Cumberland attempted a comeback. The Phoenix scored in the fifth and another two in the sixth cutting the Lady Tiger lead to one, 5-4.

After Gailor entered the seventh inning, Tomaselli led off with a single and Courtney Miles advanced her to second with a sac bunt. After another groundout to the right side advanced Tomaselli to third, Hoppenjans lined out to short to end the threat.
