PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville continued its undefeated season inside the Mid-South Conference as the Lady Tigers swept the Pikeville Bears today, 9-4 and 11-6, to move to 21-7 overall and 8-0 MSC.
The Lady Tigers banged out 25 hits in the sweep and
Rachel Denkins picked up a game-one save and a win in relief in the second.
Madison Mudd,
Brianna Scott,
Alexis Smith and
Tori Humphrey wielded the heaviest bats. Mudd parked her fourth home run of the season and was 4-for-8 with four runs scored. Scott was 4-for-8 with two runs scored and eight RBI. A. Smith and Humphrey also had multiple-hit games, going 4-for-8 and 5-for-6, respectively.
Pikeville, which made things interesting in both games, slipped to 9-17, 1-7 MSC.
GAME 1 – Campbellsville 9, PIKEVILLE 4
Morgan Gailor (9-3) worked five innings of four-hit ball, but was relieved in the fifth after allowing three Pikeville runs that drew the Bears within 6-4.
Denkins shut UPIKE down without a hit the rest of the way and collected her second save of the season.
The Lady Tigers scored two in the first, one in the second and one in the third to lead 4-0 before the Bears scored a run in the fourth and then Jillian Bohnert's fifth inning double scored three more.
Hailey Szpila, Mudd and Humphrey all had doubles in the game and Scott hit a home run, her third of the season.
GAME 2 – Campbellsville 11, Shawnee 6
Neely Quint could not make it out of the third inning after Pikeville touched her up for four runs to tie the score a 5-5. But Denkins (2-0) came in, pitched three-hit ball over four innings, struck out two and allowed only a seventh-inning score.
Leading 5-1 thanks to Scott's RBI double in the first, an RBI-single by
Jacqueline Roof in the second and Mudd's homer in the third, things started going a little south for CU.
Pikeville used a three-run home run by Logan Cline to tie the score, but Campbellsville would score five in the sixth and one in the seventh to ice the game.
After
Brittany Rippy opened the sixth with a bunt single and Roof reached on an error at third,
Mia Aldridge drew a walk to load the bases. Alexis. Smith plated the first of five runs with a sac fly. Scott and
Hailey Szpila had singles just prior to a double by Humphrey that concluded scoring in the frame.
Roof added a solo home run, her fourth of the season, in the seventh that spotted the Lady Tigers an additional insurance run.
The Lady Tigers continue in Pikeville with games three and four of the four-game series with the Bears on Saturday, March 25 with the doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m. ET.
