CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. —
Logan Roberts shut down Shawnee State University on the hill and the Tigers earned timely hitting when it counted the most in the opening Mid-South Conference series win, 8-2.
With the victory, head coach
Beauford Sanders won his 1,100
th career game as a collegiate head coach.
Roberts (2-0) went eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six. The Bears didn't get a runner past second base until the fifth inning, when JT Boggs' leadoff single came around to score.
Shawnee State (6-20, 2-5 MSC) didn't have another runner in scoring position until the eighth, as the Bears scratched a run with two outs.
At the plate, the Tigers (17-10, 5-2 MSC) were led by
Romello Carbuccia's three-hit day. Carbuccia delivered three doubles, scored a run and drove in three teammates.
David Montoya finished 3-for-3, scoring two runs and driving in another.
Diego Reynoso pitched in with a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run.
Shawnee State's Derek Moore (0-7) was the best pitcher in the Mid-South Conference his freshman season being named the Freshman and Pitcher of the Year but the senior hurler has struggled ever since. In his freshman campaign, he finished the season with a 10-2 record and a 1.50 ERA with eight complete games. Ever since, Moore has gone 9-18 with an ERA over five.
Today, the Tigers got to him early and often. He lasted only five innings, allowed nine hits and CU scored six earned runs.
CU scratched two runs in the first inning and another pair in the second.
David Montoya and
Clay Valenzuela-Reece both scored on Carbuccia's first double of the day. In the second, a leadoff walk to
Carlos Garmendia was followed with a single by
Diego Reynoso, and the two came around to score on an RBI by Montoya and
Matthew Valdez.
CU had opportunities to score in the third and fourth but came up empty. A leadoff double by Carbuccia in the third was stranded then a leadoff double by Joyce in the fourth was gunned down at the plate on a potential sacrifice fly opportunity.
The Tigers took advantage of another leadoff walk and Valenzuela-Reece stole second base to set up the third double by Carbuccia. Garmendia followed him with an RBI double as well to put CU ahead 6-0.
In the sixth, CU once again took advantage with a costly Shawnee State mistake. A leadoff error allowed Joyce to reach and his pinch-runner,
Jose Castro, eventually scored on an RBI ground ball by Valenzuela-Reece. Montoya followed with a run after a balk was called on Tyler Arthur.
That was all the Tigers needed, as Roberts and reliever Dexter Cline combined to allow four singles in the last three innings. Cline tossed the ninth inning, allowing two hits but working out the jam with a game-ending double play.
The final games of the MSC series will start at 1 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon at HIG Field. Fans can follow on the CU Sports Network and
