PIKEVILLE, Ky. —
Brianna Scott smashed a two-run home run in the seventh inning of game one and
Alexis Smith delivered a two-run bomb in the fifth inning of game two to seal the series sweep over University of Pikeville on Saturday.
The Lady Tigers (23-7, 10-0 MSC) had to rally in game one, scoring five runs in the final two innings to win, 6-4. In game two, CU was facing a 2-1 deficit after one bad inning of defense before Smith came through and delivered what ended up being the game-winner, 3-2.
Scott finished the day going 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBI. Smith was 3-for-3 in game two with her two runs batted in coming off the home run.
Mia Aldridge also had three hits and two RBI.
Morgan Gailor lasted only 3 1/3 innings in game one, but
Rachel Denkins (3-0) relieved Gailor to earn her second win of the weekend.
Neely Quint (11-4) tossed another gem in the circle by only allowing two hits and no earned runs.
Game one: Campbellsville 6, Pikeville 4
The Bears took a 2-0 lead off Gailor in the first inning Hannah Absher doubled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. She was followed with another double by Logan Cline to score Kitty Raymond, who walked with two outs.
CU cut the deficit in half after freshman
Mia Aldridge banged her fourth home run of the season. The Lady Tigers had another opportunity to plate a few more runs after getting runners on the corners without any outs, but UPIKE's Hannah Skaggs recorded three straight outs to end the threat.
The Bears added another run in the bottom of the fourth after Gailor allowed a leadoff double to Cline and a walk to Lindsay Floyd put runners on the corners. Denkins relieved Gailor in the circle but allowed an infield single to Jordan Gentry to put the Bears ahead, 3-1.
In the sixth, Scott started the rally with a one-out walk and was followed with a single by
Hailey Szpila. After a passed ball, Scott was able to score on one of the three UPIKE errors, and Szpila advanced to second.
Tori Humphrey then drove Spzila home with a single to knot the game at three-all.
The Lady Tigers took advantage of two costly errors and Scott's two-run home run in the seventh inning.
Madison Mudd and Aldridge both singled with one out and advanced one base after a Cline error. After a failed squeeze play, Aldridge came around to score the go-ahead run on the second UPIKE error. Scott then delivered the two-run bomb with
Alexis Smith aboard to give CU a 6-3 lead.
UPIKE made it interesting in the last half inning. Gentry reached on a bunt-base hit and Hannah Absher walked to bring the game-tying run to the plate. Jillian Bohnert singled to load the bases and set up a sacrifice fly by Raymond cutting CU's lead to two, 6-4. But Denkins got Cline to ground out and end the threat.
Game two: Campbellsville 3, UPIKE 2
After three errors by UPIKE in game one, the tides turned in game two and the Lady Tigers fell victim to three miscues – allowing two unearned runs.
Neely Quint pitched a two-hitter, allowing only one walk and striking out three in a 65-pitch performance.
The dynamic duo of
Jacqueline Roof and
Mia Aldridge at the top of the lineup played crucial for CU. Roof doubled to lead off the game, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Madison Mudd and Aldridge singled to left giving CU a 1-0 lead.
UPIKE scored two runs in the third inning after Campbellsville committed three errors in a span of two plays.
In the fifth, it was Roof starting the rally again but this time it was
Alexis Smith playing hero. After a leadoff double by Roof, Smith delivered a two-out two-run homer – her second of the year – giving CU a 3-2 lead.
Quint then sat down the next six batters in the fifth and sixth innings, but once again, the Bears had the game-tying run on base in the seventh after a leadoff single by Cline. Carrie Griffin attempted a sac bunt but CU's defense came through when it needed late.
Tori Humphrey was there on the bunt to cut-down the lead runner at second base for the fielder's choice. With a runner on first, Lindsay Floyd then lined out to
Brittany Rippy at second and she doubled-off Griffin at first to seal the series sweep.
The Lady Tigers are now scheduled to travel to Union College on Wednesday, March 29 with the doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. ET. CU returns to Mid-South Conference play in Williamsburg, Ky. next weekend as it heads to University of the Cumberlands on Friday-Saturday, March 31 – April 1.
