Cassidy Scantland cards second-best round of the year and sits in first at TPC Deere Run

SILVIS, Ill. — Cassidy Scantland rolled in three birdies and finished with a two-under 70 to sit in first place of the William Penn Invitational at TPC Deere Run.

The 12th-ranked Lady Tigers are seven strokes out of first place (314), as No. 8 University of the Cumberlands shot a team score of 307 to lead the field.

Playing with only four golfers today, the Lady Tigers were short handed out of the gates but made the most of it.

Scantland carded a bogey on the par-four sixth hole for her lone high number of the day, but came right back with a birdie on the par-four eighth to finish the opening nine holes even par. On the back nine, it was a pair of birdies on the par-four 13th and par-three 16th, to finish with her second-lowest score of the season (68 at SCAD-Atlanta).

Individually, Scantland leads reigning NAIA champion Kaitlyn Riley from the University of the Cumberlands (74) and Liz Furniss from Lawrence Tech (75).

Anna-Marie Hyatt is just inside the Top 5 with a four-over 76 and currently sits in fourth. Hyatt struggled on her first-nine holes, going out at three-over, but rolled in a birdie, two bogeys and six pars to finish strong.

Hyatt is tied with three others – Annabeth McKay (Cumberlnads), Brianna Baird (Northwestern Ohio) and Rachel Pingleton (Cumberlands).

Michaela Jarman was exactly the opposite of Hyatt and had a solid front-nine – the only blemish a double bogey on the par-four sixth hole and a bogey on the par-four ninth. The back nine didn't go as planned, as Jarman finished with one birdie, four bogeys and a double to sit is a tie for 11th place (80).

Sophomore Kylie Withrow didn't have it today and struggled for the most part. Withrow finished with matching eight-overs on both nines to finish tied for 38th.

After Campbellsville's team score of 314, Lawrence Tech and No. 21 Northwestern Ohio are tied for third (318), while Bethel College (322) rounds out the Top 5.

Round two of the William Penn Invitational is scheduled to start on Tuesday morning at TPC Deere Run.
