GULF SHORES, Ala. — Lady Tiger softball scored three runs in the sixth inning to come from behind to defeat Thomas University, 4-2, but Columbia College spoiled CU's Gulf Coast Invitational championship run by run-ruling the Lady Tigers 12-1.
Morgan Gailor (5-2) went the complete game by allowing two runs on nine hits in game one. Thomas University scored a single run in the first inning but not again until the fifth. Gailor struck out two batters and CU used strong defense behind her.
The win avenges an earlier loss to the Night Hawks on Feb. 17.
In game two, the Lady Tigers were two-hit and ran into a buzz saw in Columbia.
Neely Quint (5-4) tossed only 2.1 innings, allowing four runs – three earned – and faced only 10 batters.
Rachel Denkins relieved Quint but only finished the third inning, allowing five runs.
Mia Aldridge saw action in the circle, tossing the final two innings.
Rebecca Miller put together CU's only two hits – one in the first and another in the third — in the finals.
Campbellsville went 4-1 in the Gulf Coast Invitational and improves its record to 10-6 overall.
Game one: Campbellsville 4, Thomas 2
After allowing one run in the first inning, Gailor calmed down the rest of the way for her team-leading fifth complete game of the year.
Thomas University took a 2-0 lead with a run in the fifth but Hailey Spzila started the rally in the bottom half by leading off the inning with a hit by pitch. She came around to score on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by
Alexis Smith.
Gailor allowed a walk in the sixth but worked around that to get the Lady Tigers back in the dugout to put up three sixth-inning runs.
Leading off the inning was a bunt single by
Madison Mudd and she advanced to second on a sac bunt by Miller. Aldridge then reached on one of the two Night Hawk errors to put runners on the corners with one out. Mudd then caught the defense napping and swiped home plate on a stolen base.
Kalin Bottoms replaced Aldridge on the base paths and she was driven in with an RBI-single by
Brianna Scott. Scott came around to score on a
Tori Humphrey single. Six Lady Tigers compiled CU's six hits, while Thomas out-hit CU 9-6.
Gailor allowed a pair of one-out singles in the seventh but worked around both to secure the win. She stranded nine Night Hawks on the bases all day.
Game two: Columbia 12, Campbellsville 2
Columbia struck first after a leadoff single by Carly Spalding. She stole second base, the first of three on the day, and advanced to third on a wild throw by
Markie Smith, setting up a Allyson Metz RBI base knock. Spalding led Columbia's attack, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs.
The top of the order did the damage, as the top six hitters had all but three of the 15 Columbia hits. The top four hitters drove in a combined eight runs.
Campbellsville answered after another leadoff hit by pitch to
Jacqueline Roof. She stole second base, advanced to third on a sac bunt by Mudd, and was driven in by
Rebecca Miller.
Columbia answered that with eight runs in the next two innings, chasing both Quint and Denkins out of the game.
Aldridge pitched the lone perfect inning of the day in the fourth but Columbia smacked around four hits and scored three runs in the fifth to run-rule Campbellsville.
Campbellsville will now host Davenport and Kentucky Christian on Friday, March 10 starting with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. ET. The Lady Tigers will play KCU and No. 24 University of Rio Grande on Saturday, March 11. starting at 9:30 a.m.
