OWENSBORO, Ky. — It was a tale of two games, as Campbellsville punched out 12 hits and 12 runs in game one but only put together two hits and two runs in game two but were able to pull out a doubleheader sweep over Brescia University, 12-2 and 2-1.
The win pushes CU to 24-14 overall and improves its win streak to six games in the last two weeks.
It was
Marlor Villafana,
Romello Carbuccia and
Diego Reynoso compiling eight of the 12 hits and driving in a combined seven runs in game one. Villafana had four RBI, while Reynoso had three.
Malik Evans (4-2) went 5.2 innings, allowed six hits and two runs while striking out three.
Clayton Carrico went 1.1 innings, by only allowing one base runner and striking out three of the four batters he faced.
In game two, it was
Dexter Cline (3-1) and
Jared Welander (save, 1) combining to allow two hits and one earned run. The pitching staff as a whole walked 11 batters overall in the two games but the Tigers defense was solid and did not commit an error through 14 innings, holding Brescia to only three runs.
Campbellsville now travels to West Virginia Tech for a weekend series before Easter on Friday-Saturday, April 14-15.
Game one: Campbellsville 12, Brescia 2:
The Tigers put up crooked-number runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth to dominate game one. CU took a 2-1 lead after the second but plated five runs in the fourth to break it open. CU piled on the fifth with three runs and in the sixth with two.
In the second it was a one-out walk by
Romello Carbuccia and he scored on
Marlor Villafana's first home run of the season.
The fourth inning saw all nine players come to the plate and it started with Carbuccia leading off with a single. Reynoso delivered an RBI single and
David Montoya doubled in two more runs. After a walk to Valdez to load the bases again,
Clay Valenzuela-Reece delivered a sac fly to score the fourth run, followed by a passed ball scoring Montoya.
In the fifth inning, Carbuccia started the rally once again with a double and the Tigers had runners on first and second after a Garmendia hit by pitch. Carbuccia scored on a Villafana single and and Reynoso drove in Garmendia and Villafana for CU's three runs.
The Tigers had six batters in the sixth and it all started with a one-out walk to

Game two: Campbellsville 2, Brescia 1
The Tigers once again took an early lead with a first-inning run. Montoya and
Matt Valdez both reached on hit by pitches before Zach McDonald scored Montoya on a wild pitch.
In the fourth, Campbellsville scored a much-needed insurance run. Valenzuela-Reece reached on a drag base hit and advanced to second on one of Brescia's two errors. Carbuccia walked to put runners on first and second with one out and
Marlor Villafana loaded the bases with another Brescia error. Christensen ended up driving in a run with a fielder's choice for CU's game-winning run.
Cline walked a batter in at least every inning but worked around each jam. Welander picked up a two-inning save – his first of the year – by pitching the sixth and seventh. In both innings, he allowed a walk but also worked around both.
The two lone hits came from a Valenzuela-Reece bunt single and Christensen single to left field early on.
