CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — In a dramatic two-game slate where no lead was sacred, Campbellsville and Lindsey Wilson both rallied late for wins and split the first two games and a four-game series today at Veterans Memorial Park. The teams will be back in action tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Lindsey Wilson (33-8, 19-1 MSC) scored six runs in the top of the seventh of the opening game, overcoming a 5-1 deficit, and pinned a disappointing 7-5 loss on the Lady Tigers (31-9, 18-1 MSC).
Campbellsville returned the favor in Game 2, coming back from a 5-0 deficit after 2 ½ innings and scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to eventually win, 8-7.
The split keeps alive CU's hopes for a regular season conference title. The Lady Tigers will have to sweep tomorrow and hold serve in a make-up doubleheader at the University of the Cumberlands on April 21. Or, hope that the Blue Raiders stump their toe in a regular-season doubleheader with Georgetown.
Neely Quint (16-4) was the loser in the first game, but came on in relief in the second game with CU trailing 7-6. She picked up the win in Game 2. Lindsey's Casey Bryan (17-4) was exactly the opposite, winning the first game and losing the second during a 1 2/3 innings of relief.
GAME 1 – Lindsey Wilson 7, Campbellsville 5
After the Blue Raiders had taken a 1-0 lead on a fourth inning run-scoring single by Samantha Luckett, Campbellsville sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth and went up 5-1.
Brianna Scott led off CU's half of the fifth with a home run and after that it was a merry-go-round.
Markie Smith singled and
Brittany Rippy reached on an error, setting the table for
Jacqueline Roof's double to right that scored two runs.
Tori Humphrey doubled home Roof and with two outs
Mia Aldridge's single scored Humphrey.
The score stayed that way until the top of the seventh when Lindsey loaded the bases on consecutive singles. One run scored on a putout at first and then a double by Cassie Kooker brought the Blue Raiders to within one, 5-4. With two outs Sydney Fourman was intentionally walked to set up a force at every base, but the strategy backfired when Amber Foukes sent a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence.
Roof had two of CU's six hits in the game and knocked in two runs. The other four hits were split among Humphrey, Aldridge, Scott and
Markie Smith.
GAME 2 –Campbellsville 8, Lindsey Wilson 7
Lindsey Wilson went on top 3-0 in the first inning after chasing CU starter,
Morgan Gailor, after only 1/3 inning of work.
Rachel Denkins came in and gave up two more runs in the third.
Facing that 5-0 deficit, Campbellsville started whittling away.
Hailey Szpila's single scored
Rebecca Miller and
Mia Aldridge. Szpila scored on
Brianna Scott's single.
The Lady Tigers went ahead 6-5 in the fifth when
Jacqueline Roof hit a three-run triple to right.
But Lindsey Wilson scored three in the sixth and took an 8-6 lead.
Tori Humphrey scored on an error in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-7.
Then in the seventh, CU loaded the bases with no outs. Scott scored on an infield bobble and
Madison Mudd scored on the Blue Raiders' third error of the inning.
Scott had three of CU's 11 hits with Roof and Szpila having two hits apiece. Szpila and Roof both had three RBIs each.
