BECKLEY, W. Va. — The Tigers hit three home runs, plated five runs in the final two innings and the bullpen teamed up with starter
Nick Przybylek to tame West Virginia Tech in a 9-4 series finale victory.
Przybylek (5-3) went six innings, allowed eight hits and three runs, while the bullpen combined to pitch three innings and did not allow a hit.
At the plate, it was
Romello Carbuccia smashing two homes runs and pushing his weekend total to three and team-leading season total to five. He finished the day going 2-for-4 with the two RBI. In addition,
Carlos Garmendia swung a hot bat this weekend, collecting to hits and driving in two runs, while
Diego Reynoso went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Campbellsville got down early, 3-2, after five innings but the Tigers out-scored the Golden Bears 7-1 in the final four frames. With the win, CU improves to 26-14 overall and will play another two-game road series at Missouri Baptist on Tuesday, April 18 starting at 2 p.m. ET.
Przybylek allowed one run in the first inning after collecting two quick outs. An infield single and stolen base by Tanner Levine turned into a run after an RBI single by Jacob Reimold.
Carbuccia answered right back with one of his two solo home runs in the second to knot the game but the Golden Bears took a 3-1 lead after three innings. CU inched back to within one run after Carbuccia homered once again in the fourth.
In the sixth, Jarron Monroe allowed a pair of walks to
Clay Valenzuela-Reece and
Matthew Valdez to start the inning. After picking up a pop out by
Brett Hamilton and striking out Carbuccia, Monroe walked his third batter, Garmendia, to load the bases and
Marlor Villafana made him pay with a two-out two-RBI double to right field.
CU plated three more in the eighth with some help by the WVU Tech pitching staff and defense. Valdez led off the inning with a solo home run and Monroe was replaced by Dalton Grisell. Pinch hitter
Hunter Christensen was hit by a pitch and Garmendia singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. Villafana reached on error to score a run and
Diego Reynoso delivered the third run with an RBI single putting CU ahead, 7-3.
The Tigers kept the pedal to the floor in the ninth, starting with a one-out single by pinch-hitter
Jose Castro. After a stolen base,
Shane Stober walked and Garmendia scored both with a double down the leftfield line.
Dillon Day,
Jared Welander and
DJ Wilson all saw action in the final three innings. The bullpen allowed a run on two walks, while Welander struck out five of the six batters he faced.
