Lions no match for Lady Tigers as softball wins a couple of run-rule games at Veterans Memorial Park

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The Lady Tigers banged out 23 hits in two run-rule games today and got back to their winning ways with a sweep of Bryan College at Veterans Memorial Park.

Rachel Denkins (4-1) picked up the Game 2 win in her first start of the season by pitching a two-hitter to help move CU to 33-11 overall, while Bryan slipped to 20-20.

Tori Humphrey (2), Jacqueline Roof (2) and Mia Aldridge (1) shared five home runs on the day. Roof had five RBI, helped by a grand slam, while Miller and Humphrey had four RBI apiece.

Campbellsville also had defeated Bryan 6-3 in its first game of the season at the NAIA Southern Challenge in Beaufort, S.C.

GAME 1 – Campbellsville 9, Bryan 1

Neely Quint (17-5) threw a five-hitter and her teammates supported her with 13 hits in a six-inning run-rule win. Morgan Gailor came in and faced four batters, allowing a two-out double to Kayla Hayes in the top of the sixth.

Tori Humphrey and Brianna Scott combined for six of the Lady Tigers' 13 hits. Humphrey had two solo home runs to bring her season total to eight. She had three RBI. Scott had a double and two singles and her third-inning safety scored Brittany Rippy.

Rippy had two singles and Rebecca Miller (2 RBI), Alexis Smith, Madison Mudd, and Hailey Szpila all had one hit apiece. Jacqueline Roof led off the game with her team-leading ninth home run of the season.

CU got out of the blocks with a 2-0 lead off homers by Roof and Humphrey in the bottom of the first. After Bryan closed the gap to 2-1 in the second off a Marissa Murray single, it was all Lady Tigers after that.

GAME 2 –Campbellsville 10, Bryan 2

Campbellsville led 9-0 through four innings until reliever Morgan Gailor ran into a little bad luck, giving up a leadoff single to Shelby Ralston and the second batter reaching on Brittany Rippy's bobble at second.

After an out, Gailor walked the next batter on what looked like a third strike and then Heidi Smith singled to drive in two runs, forcing CU to score in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

Jacqueline Roof hit a two-out double and Rippy reached on a walk just prior to Maddie Sweeney's two-RBI double to deep center to end the game.

Roof, Humphrey and Miller had two hits each in the game.

The Lady Tigers stay out of conference on Thursday, April 20 when they host Kentucky Christian University at a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Park.
