Tigers are off the pace by seven strokes after opening round of Mid-South Conference Championship

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — After a few rainy days in the southern Kentucky area, Tiger golf and the entire field of 39 could not take advantage of soft green conditions at Bowling Green Country Club. Four teams sit within seven strokes of each other but CU had four scores in the 70s with a high round of 86 pushed CU back.

Campbellsville sits in fourth place with a team score of 303 – just seven stroke off the leaders at Lindsey Wilson College and University of the Cumberlands, which shot 296. Cumberland University is three strokes ahead of Campbellsville with an opening round 300.

Justin Warman once again paced the Tigers with a two-over 74. Justin Riffle was right behind with a 75, while James Higgins shot 76 and Tyler Harrod at 78. Andrew Scalos struggled in the first round with an 86.

Warman was up-and-down all day, rolling in four birdies, four bogeys and a double. Warman was able to salvage the double on the front-nine with a trio of birdies on holes No. 3, 5 and 7. He currently is tied for sixth place.

Outside his double bogey on the par-four 15th hole, Riffle was steady like usual and is tied for ninth. He drained a pair of birdies as well on two par fives – No. 14 and No. 2.

Higgins, who is tied for 12th, had five bogeys but rolled a birdie on the 14th. Harrod was able to overcome a double bogey on the par-five second with a pair of front-nine birdies, but he fell victim to six bogeys throughout to sit tied for 21st.

Scalos, which jumped into the Top 5 after a solid two rounds at the CU Invitational two weeks ago at Rosewood, struggled in his first MSC Championship. Outside of his birdie on the par-five second, he finished with 10 bogeys, a double and a triple to fall back in 39th place.

A pair of individuals are tied for the lead – Lindsey Wilson's Rasmus Lind and Cumberlands' Ben Kendrick (-2, 70). Frederik Willer, Kevin McCracken and Austin Williams are tied for third (+1, 73) to round out the Top 5.

Rounding out the team scores – Lindsey Wilson (296), Cumberlands (206), Cumberland University (300), Campbellsville (303), Shawnee State (313), Pikeville (313) and Georgetown College (315).

The second round will get underway on Tuesday, April 25 at 9 a.m. ET. The Tigers five golfers will start their rounds out at 8:27 a.m. ET, as Tyler Harrod starts CU off on hole No. 10.
