Tigers pound out 17 runs in doubleheader rout of Midway in regular season finale

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — With six other Mid-South Conference teams battling this weekend on the diamond for a chance to move on into the tournament finals, Campbellsville baseball had a bye and hosted Midway University for the final two regular season contests of the season.

After a 5-1 victory in game, Campbellsville took advantage of costly Midway errors in the first and second inning of game two to rout the Eagles, 12-2.

The Tigers (31-17, 13-5 MSC) will now have a full week to prepare for the MSC Championship at Bowling Green Ball Park in Bowling Green, Ky. The tournament with the final four teams is scheduled to start Friday, May 5 and the tournament championship game(s) will be played on Sunday, May 7.

All games for the Tigers will be streamed online on the Campbellsville University Sports Network at the links above. In addition, video streaming is available on the Mid-South Sports Network.

Game one: Campbellsville 5, Midway 1

Nick Przybylek shined on the hill, tossing six innings of five-hit baseball and striking out four in his 89-pitch performance. Przybylek, a First-Team All-MSC selection earned his seventh win of the year. Jared Welander, a second-team performer, pitched the final inning and did not allow a run.

Offensively, the five hits for CU came from five different Tigers up-and-down the order. CU scratched a run in the first, two in the third and two more in the sixth.

In the first it was a one-out walk and a pair of wild pitches that allowed David Montoya to reach third base before Romello Carbuccia, a First-Team selection, drove him in with an RBI single to left.

Midway pushed a run in the second off Przybylek. Three singles in the inning loaded the bases and Przybylek walked in the lone run for the Eagles with two outs.

CU answered right back in the third with a little help from Midway. Montoya once again started the rally with a one-out walk and ended up scoring on an error to put CU ahead, 2-1. After a walk and stolen base by Carlos Garmendia, Brett Hamilton drove him in with a double to put the Tigers up, 3-1.

Przybylek allowed only two more base runners in the next few innings before CU gave Welander some breathing room with a few insurance runs. Clay Valenzuela-Reece led off the sixth with a single and move to second on a sac bunt by Hunter Christensen. After a walk to Diego Reynoso, Riley Joyce singled in a run and later in the inning, Marlor Villafana walked with the bases loaded to score Jose Castro – a pinch-runner for Reynoso.

Game two: Campbellsville 12, Midway 2

The Tigers used five pitchers but it was the offense that sparked CU to a double-digit win. Campbellsville scratched five runs in the fifth and six in the second to lead 11-1 after two innings off three pitchers – Hector Quinones (4-4), Neal Kirkpatrick and Conner Lindsay.

Midway scored one run in the second and third innings, respectively, off starter Indalecio Romo (4-1). But that was all the bullpen would allow, tossing four innings of two-hit ball and walking only one.

Offensively, the Tigers picked up multi-hit games from Matthew Valdez, Romella Carbuccia, Clay Valenzuela-Reece, and Diego Reynoso. Brett Hamilton went 1-for-1 with a walk, scored two runs and drove in three more with a bases-clearing triple. In addition, Valenzuela-Reece drove in three as well, while David Montoya delivered two RBIs.

Malik Evans, Dillon Day, Dexter Cline and Kirby Broadbent all saw action on the hill.
