LAKE WALES, Fla. — Tiger volleyball swept Bluefield College in the opening round of the NAIA conference tournament but got a taste of its own medicine, falling via sweep at the hands of Cincinnati Christian University.
The Tigers end their season with a 10-21 record and finished 6-4 inside conference play entering this weekend's tournament.
Cincinnati Christian will now move on to play host and top-seeded Warner University for the inaugural conference title on Saturday.
Game one: Campbellsville 3, Bluefield 0
After a sluggish first-set win 25-23, the Tigers dominated the final two sets by winning 25-7 and 25-8.
In the first set, CU hit .062 and gave the Rams every opportunity but Bluefield hit just .040 itself. CU jumped out to a 18-15 lead but Bluefield rallied to take a 19-18 lead.
Rafael Cruz and
Bryce Johnson sparked the Tigers with a pair of kills and
Philip Turia added another for the Tigers to take a 23-20 lead. Once again, though, Bluefield rallied and tied the set at 23-all.
Adam Conklin nailed a kill for set-point and Turia delivered one of the 12 service aces for CU to seal the set.
In the second, the Tigers hit a season-high .611 with 13 kills on 18 attacks and only two errors. In the third set, CU kept the pedal to the floor, hitting .429.
Conklin led CU with 11 kills, while Johnson finished with nine. Turia dished out 22 assists and
Noel Camello led CU with 10 digs.
Game two: Cincinnati Christian 0, Campbellsville 3
Campbellsville ended its season the exact same way it started – a loss to Cincinnati Christian, 25-16, 29-27, 25-22. The Tigers and Trolls met three times this season and CCU got the best of CU each time.
After hitting -.103 in the first set and Cincinnati Christian winning 25-16, the Tigers gave the Trolls all they wanted in the final two sets.
Campbellsville led 21-19 but CCU won four of the next five points in set No. 2 forcing coach
Billy Gregory to call a timeout. Cruz came out of the timeout with a kill and tied the set at 23 and once again at 24. The Tigers rallied to take a 26-25 lead but the Trolls four of the next five once more to take a two-set lead, 29-27.
In the third, Campbellsville and CCU battled back and fourth until the Trolls led 22-21 and finished the set on a mini 3-1 run to end the Tigers season.
Cruz and Conklin led CU with nine kills, while Johnson had eight. Turia once again led CU with 26 assists and Cruz led the Tigers with eight digs.
